did I jack up my Brother DCP-L2540DW printer by using generic toner?

I used a cheap L.I.N.K.Y.O toner cartridge in this printer, and there are toner smudges on the sides of the paper, and a light shade of toner over the entire paper where it's supposed to be blank, making the printout look dirty.

Did I contaminate the printer itself, or does the cartridge just need cleaning?

hard to say did you look inside to see if toner was dumped or not?
I tried generic in my Dell Color laser buying cartridges as well as refills neither worked as well as original.
One major test was the QR code for boarding pass would not scan at the airport. Changed to Dell and they work fine.

I would give it a cleaning and see how it works after a few pages. 3rd party toners if not manufactured correctly can dump excessive toner sometimes. Rarely this ruins things permanently.

We had a color laser at work that the secretaries (who did the office supply purchasing) insisted buying generic toner for. Well, we tried it not once but twice and the generics shit toner everywhere. Toner is a VERY fine powder and very difficult to clean..... told them they were welcome to come and clean the printer -OR- just buy OEM. They now buy OEM.

i just removed the cartridge, and there's a shitload of toner on the roller.

actually, compared to the original oem starter cartridge, the lin.kyo cartridge looks normal.

but I'm still getting toner dust on the left and right edges of my prints.
