Today the Panasonic DP-UB420 Streaming 4K Ultra HD Hi-Res Blu-Ray Player is posted at $149. I got it for $20 less with a code, I think it was NOVSAV19 or something like that. The code was on the site right under the player but I can't get it to come up again. Maybe it was a one time deal or a Google pay thing (which I used). There are also good open box deals if you can't get the code.
In for one. I have the UB820 now, and it's hands down the best UHD player I've ever owned. The HDR optimizer and manual adjustment tool really sets this apart from the rest of the brands.
I have no use for Dolby vision. HDR10 is all my projector supports. I just wish there was more support for the streaming apps. There is no Disney + support at this time.
this model was only available in Australia and Europe for almost 2 years. But went under DP-UB420GNK . Nice to see it finally made it to the states, and at a very attractive price point.
For those not familiar with why this would work better than your Xbox One, or Samsung, and Sony players. It's all about the HDR content. With all the other players in the market, you are forced to watch HDR content at whatever the player is defaulted to. There is no adjustment for brighter HDR picture. Most TVs are not capable of 1000nits. Most projectors are not capable of 500nits. Therefor HDR content looks dark. So any movie with dark scenes look horrible.
With this player, you can set HDR content 12 levels darker, or 12 level brighter than the default output. So on a decent 4K TV or projector, your HDR content will match or come close to the brightness of SDR content.
Quick example. Watching Bladerunner 2049, at the beginning when the 2 characters have a fight in the house. It's a very dark scene that uses lighting only from the windows within the room they are in. With a Sony UBP-X800, this scene was nearly completely washed out by how dark it was. The lighting sources from the windows within the room were muddled as if they had tints over them. With the UB820, you could see the details within the dark scenery. Characters arnt blending with the background, etc..

Looking at this or the Samsung 8500. My Q7 can't handle DV so I'm leaning towards the 8500 player which can atleast do HDR+
Panasonic player will be much better than the Samsung. Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players do tone mapping 4 HDR content. 8500 series Samsung is an old player at this time

Thanks, I think Samsung is out the DVD player game too. Hmmm, now to find a good deal on open box or use Google shopping for $20 off
Thanks!
Got one with the NOVSAV19 code which is the Google Shopping code (until 12/01) for 20% off up to $20 max discount.
I've always had and loved the Panasonic DVD/Bluray players.
I just bought this for $189 a few days ago and it's fantastic. I could not get CS to price match so I bought an open box for $135 (could not get the code to work) and will return the first one. Saves me almost $60 after tax. THANK YOU!
You need to use and checkout through Google Shopping and not through the BestBuy site.
At checkout, you should see an 'Offers' section with the 20% promotion currently going on.
Purchased yesterday @$150. It's not letting me use the code NOVSAV19 at checkout and I see no mention of it. Using Google checkout. Oh well, good deal anyway.
Edit: NOVSAVE19 is the code, good for first time buyers on Google Shopping only.
