FLIR has a sale on many thermal cameras and other meters. If I didn't already have one I would buy. Very useful/fun, for homeowners and HVAC pros.

Same price on Amazon (shipped/sold by Amazon, in stock Dec 10 as of right now): https://www.amazon.com/FLIR-TG165...B00NXJDQV0

Picked one up to replace my old Gen 1 FLIR ONE. Can finally put my iPhone 5 to rest...

It's decent. I wouldn't use it for routine Infrared Testing, but I've used this to verify corrections in hot spots. You can grab the data pretty easy of the USB cable and download it to a computer too. I would definitely make sure you have a case though. The case is worth the $50. I use this for work, but it bought it because it was a cheap in a pinch. The C3 appears to be better, but if you work in manufacturing or and industrial environment, spring for a better model. I've had misses with this before.

Is this a better or worse unit than the smartphone models from Flir and Seek?

Of course it's better. It's a dedicated device while those were small attachments not meant for heavy duty usage.
Is this one though? Looks like it's very low resolution

You're saying the product is a rip off because it sat for a year and the battery is dead? Sounds like you just need a new battery, and a vacation.

the battery can't be changed. I looked at recent reviews and they say that it is a faulty product. also, how many times do you use a thermal imager? I use it in the winter cause you want to detect heat leaks and occasionally plumbing but you don't get many of those in a year.

Maybe I should consider buying one for home use. I've rented one from Home Depot for at least $70 to check leaks at home and I want to check the house every year for minute leaks. Maybe this will pay for itself over time. I don't think higher quality will make a difference for my needs.

The $20 version at HomeDepot/Lowes works just fine for the home owner.
