Don't know where you are, but up North you must limit humidity beneath what you might feel comfortable at or it will cause mold. That is tough to do if you don't know the humidity.

I don't get it. If your house feels too humid or too dry or too hot or too cold, fix it until it feels right. What exactly does this actually help with?

Also again up north, a couple percentage points higher in humidity will make your home feel warmer without the need to turn the temperature up. This saves on heating cost dramatically.
The furnace dries out the air so you need to up the humidity. However not over the conversion from outside temperature to inside temperature with regards to the humidity levels.

Some toddlers with allergies/asthma need specific humidity levels. What "feels" right to me may not be the best for my child.

Why is that? I thought since you have cold winters, the absolute humidity is lower over all, so you should be less concern about adding too much humidity?
