Out of Stock

$254 at checkout due to additional 15% discount.

Detailed specs:
https://cdn.cnetcontent.com/syndi...iginal.pdf

Service manual:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06248787

Drivers:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/driv...l/27734197

The memory config is 8GB x 1, with an empty memory slot, so can upgrade to 16GB dual channel by adding another 8GB module.

The stock SSD is SATA, but can be upgraded to NVMe.

The stock wifi module is Realtek. It can be upgraded to Intel AC9260 or AX200.

Guide to Upgrading SSD, RAM, Wifi
from user adealaday:

Opening up the chasis
This is the video that i used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eA9CdBBELE
The screws are exactly where he says they are.
Note: The clips are fragile, so be careful. Opening the chasis took a lot more effort than the video showed, and I broke two small clips during the process.
I started it in one corner like the video, but rather than going from left to right, I went from top left corner and kept going the other direction.

RAM
There is an empty slot there. The one that's from the computer is a Samsung 8GB 2666. You can put your new RAM in the empty slot. You pop in the RAM and push it down until it clicks in. And that's it!

SSD
There is a SATA SSD (128GB). I replaced this with an Inland Premium 256GB M.2 NVME PCIE gen 3x4, and it works very well. You can replace it with any M.2 NVME PCIe 3x4 drive. There is also the 1TB spinning disk hard drive. It's a 2.5 inch size. So, you can replace that with any 2.5 inch SSD. There are a couple of mounting brackets that you need to unscrew, but otherwise it is pretty easy to do.

If you are going to upgrade your SSD, remember to create a backup tool, you can see how from the beginng of that video from above. This will re install everything to your laptop, including the HP software.

If you don't want any HP software reinstalled, you can use Windows Media Creation tool that creates a bootable clean install. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../windows10
Note: Remember to disable secure boot and enable USB boot option in the BIOS the laptop can boot into the USB drive to reinstall. Your WIndows 10 license is tied to your motherboard, so the new install should be able to detect your license and install the correct version.
After you reinstalled windows, download the HP Assistant which will automatically download all the other necessary drivers. Or you can do individual drivers here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/driv...l/27734197

Per user/ spocko:
The stock SSD is SATA, not NVMe. Mine came with a Liteon CV8-8E128-HP. It's a slow drive compared to other SSDs. Any NVMe SSD would be faster.
The storage config in this laptop is goofy in my opinion. Most users would have been better served by a 256GB SSD instead of a 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, and the cost would have been similar or lower. The HDD is also kinda noisy. At some point I will probably just remove both of the factory drives and replace them with a single NVMe SSD.

Rattling touchpad
You may notice that the touchpad may rattle a bit. Like when you do a one finger touch (without pushing), it feels like it clicks. This is a design flaw. The touchpad bar mechanism is underneath the battery. In theory, it can be fixed like the HP $280 Costco laptop. I opened it up but found that the bar mechanism does not have the foam like the $280 one and it wasn't as easy to get a consistent result. Feel free to attempt it if you want to, but just wanted to share that I couldn't get it to work.

WiFi Adapter
I replaced the Wifi adapter with an Intel AX200 wifi6 adapter. You can find these on Ebay and Amazon. This is the one I bought, but I believe almost any AX200 from intel will work: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

Just remember to have the driver already downloaded on a flash drive before starting. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/...Fi-6-AX200

There's some concern with having an Intel module being incompatible with a Ryzen chip. I'm not an expert on this, but this is what I found that convinced me it will be ok: https://linustechtips.com/main/to...o-and-cpu/

I did have an issue where, after I installed everything, the adapter would not work. This required a few restarts and reinstall/unsintall of the driver, but seems to be working now (for at least 1 week). So, if you run into similar issues, give restart a try.

Fan Noise
My fan is on most of the time, but only came on like a jet engine during the BIOS update.
I've made 2 changes:
- in BIOS, changed "Fan Always On" to "Disabled"
- In advanced power settings (Settings->Power and Sleep->Additional Power Setting->Change Plan Setting->Change advanced power setting->Processor power management->System cooling policy->Plugged in-> Passive

I downloaded the popular Notebook Fan Control, but that did not have a profile for this model. However, the HP Pavilion 17 profile actually works. Enable it and set your slider to 0%. This just means that it'll default to not having the fans on. But if certain temps are reached, then the fans will turn on automatically.

It's actually $254 at checkout. All of VipOutlet's eBay inventory is 15% off for the next three days.

As for the laptop itself, I played around with it a bit at my local WM last week. Solid performing and looking machine. Only thing it's missing is a touchscreen, but at $254 with these specs no one should be complaining. Do wish the 41WHr battery was a bit bigger though. A 15" laptop can easily accommodate a battery in the 50-60 WHr range.

is RAM upgradable?
Having Single channel memory sounds really bad w/ integrated graphics.
Is SSD upgradable?

Looks good since I prefer Ryzen 5 over i5 w/UHD 620.
It is heavy and refurbished, but its $299. who cares when it is that cheap.

The service manual showed two slots. I bought this earlier and am still waiting to receive it. The lenovo flex someone else linked has one slot and 4gb soldered. I've been following ryzen laptop deals. This is the best deal available with a 1080p screen and a decent sized heatsink to run at 25 watts rather than 15.

this is blowing up, clearly I was wrong not to post this deal lol.

SSD is an M.2 and the hard drive is a standard SATA. Both are upgradeable. The memory is upgradeable to 16GB, but whether that's 1X 16GB or 2X 8GB I could not find. Sure hope it has two memory slots because Ryzen underperforms with single channel memory and the stock configuration is 1X 8GB.

Update: Has 2X memory slots. Should be able to reach 32GB max in a 2X 16GB config (though that would be massively overkill).
