Knowing Kohls the MSRP will change to $499.99 before their 50% off sale starts. It's Christmas Magic

For anyone not familliar with what model train scales & gauges translate to in terms of actual size, here's a comparison chart (click on the graphic below):

Agreed that the electric Lionel sets are fairly well made, they will last awhile and have some nice functions especially at these very cheap prices, and the theming options can help kids identify.

FWIW - once you get one of these sets, it's equally fun to take your kid(s) to a nearby train shop and let them pick out add-on cars, maybe some extra track and/or buildings. Sure, local hobby shops won't have "slick deals", but the experience of seeing and buying some of this stuff with your kid(s) in a store is priceless, IMO.

I've been looking for a set for a while, none of these are what I was looking got but I grabbed the Mickey Mouse one and will return if another comes up soon.

Any of the lion chief sets are technically beginner sets. I was going back and forth between the Pennsylvania at $132, and the Mickey one at $148. Ultimately I went with the Mickey one because I think my 5 year old daughter will identify with that one. If I had a boy that liked trains in general I would have bought the Penn.

Keep in mind that last year for a few days Kohl's had 50% toys, and Lionel sets were included. If you want to gamble that they do it again, the prices then were lower. If not, these are decent prices.

Any of the O gauge ones are good. They all work the same. It just depends on your preference. My preference is the Polar Express because of how much I like the movie and train, but you probably won't want to use it year-round.

I brought the Mickey mouse train last year at this price for my 3 year old son. This was the best price and he loves it. The sounds are great for kids and it's cool train for adults to play with too!

I've had a hodgepodge of all the different sizes and for the casual toy train fan I don't think you can go wrong with Lionel O gauge as long as it fits your budget and space constraints.

My son started with the $50 polar express set included in this set when he was about 4. It's still used under our tree. Now he has a 4'x8' ho scale setup in the basement and wants to add dcc engines. O gauge is pretty large.
