Seriously OP,. How on earth do you fail to mention the little tidbit about activation required?

Are people buying expensive cell phones and just throwing them in a drawer un-activated? Why is everyone shocked it's with activation ?

Yea but if your trying to use some garbage service to save money then you shouldn't have a $500 cell phone anyway. They are most likely leasing tower use from Verizon or ATT anyway

Yes but I want the phone and not necessarily the service. I use the phone over WIFI all the time, I do everything on my phone, pay bills, write emails. I even navigate with my phone overseas with no service at all, only with offline maps. Don't care about the service, service is too expensive in my book, if you pay 40+ a month for internet only, because in my view that's what these phones are made, calls and texts are just an added drag, I can text/call over WIFI for free. That's just me I guess but in my opinion I value the device way above the service.

I am on a grandfathered family plan on TMO. There's absolutely no reason for me to activate a phone on another carrier! I always buy unlocked models or used ones.

Why not just buy a chrome book then, it's cheaper and you can do all the same stuff on WiFi
