I purchased this mic last time it was on sale for this price and it has been very good addition to my videography kit. I actually prefer using this one over my Rodes mic and thats probably because this one is amplified and the Rode that I own isn't. Both of them produce great sound quality but Marantz gets the nod because of the size and amplification.

In general, no. Most microphones don't have a 'boost' mode for a reason. If you care about sound, you use a second system to record audio, and your mixer or recorder is going to be able to deliver cleaner gain than the microphone can.

However, this style of mic is intended for use on cameras and is often plugged directly into the camera. Most modern cameras have decent preamps, but older cameras, espeically in the Canon t2i-t4i era, had dirty preamps (and auto gain control) so you wanted as little camera gain as possible.

Fyi, $44 on Amzn, 3.1/5 stars, 6 reviews.

Thoughts on this vs the Takstars that usually go for around $25 and seem to be the most popular in this range? I've been looking for something and have had the takstar in my cart for a while. I like the Marantz brand (I have a few of their older receivers) so curious about this deal.

**EDIT: It appears the popular Takstar SCG-598 is mono only, while this Marantz is stereo. And the stereo version of the Takstar(SCG-698) doesn't seem as popular, FWIW.

For me no, I need db gain because I need the voice louder. A Rode can boost to 20db, makes a huge difference.

They have used ones for $15, but shipping is $5. At that point it's probably worth the extra $5 to get a brand new in box with warranty.

In for one, reviews look spotty on Amazon but worth a try for $25.

Any idea if this is better or worse compared to Rode Videomicro?
