It makes me laugh when people use exaggerations like this. This is one of, if not the best, electric sharpener on the market.

Most of my gyutos are $500-600 each - I sharpen them by hand on waterstones but each knife takes me 10-15 minutes and it's a skill that requires learning and enjoyment. My stones cost more than most peoples knives. But I am a knife nut and I enjoy doing it. I often see people recommend learning sharpening but if a person doesn't enjoy it, it's quite a hassle to hand sharpen a full set of 'nicer' knives and ultimately it becomes a chore..or they have dull knives.

Nice knives to most people would be global, shun, henckels, etc. and this sharpener is perfectly adequate for sharpening those. Sure, you remove more steel than you need to...but if you're sharpening your knives every 3-4 months and aren't very heavy handed with the sharpener, realistically it'll be years before you remove so much steel that you can notice that you've widened the bevel.. in which case you can have it thinned and then carry on sharpening.

This one is easy to use, foolproof to sharpen a knife without shaving too much metal comparing to manual pulling knife sharpeners.

I'm not sure if I can believe a knife sharpener can be worth $80. I have a cheap little $5 manual one and it works just fine. For an electric one I can see paying maybe $20 or $30 but $80 seems a little steep. What makes it so special/worth the money?
It's simple. There are $30 knives and then there are $300 knives. This is for the latter.

I just bought the work sharp knife sharpener from Cabela's for 70$ on black Friday. That one is a mini belt sander with 80, 220, & 6000 grit belts. How does this one compare to that style of knife sharpening?
