ridiculous comment... for one they have the high end 250 dollar mips helmets if you want one. BUT the only thing better about those is they are lighter and more stylish and comfortable. and maybe the MIPS thing but i still rock the old non MIPS helmets.

just wear a helmet. if you can afford a nice one and ride a bit they are worth it but this is a GREAT helmet for the $$$.

based on ZERO science i replace my helmets every 5-6 years; but i use them a lot so by then they are usually pretty gross.

I just heard that bike helmets (and most helmets with styrofoam) have expiration date, no official dates like on food products. However, for safety its suggested to get a new helmet every couple of seasons. Is this a real thing?

If this is the case, how do I know how old this helmet is? Could have been made 3 years ago.

The helmet in styrofoam doesn't break down in 2 seasons

There is debate on this.
Its not the breakdown of the EPS or EPP by air (just from sitting around), its from the sun, sweat, etc.

I have not seen any real evidence from anyone on this. Our forums are filled with back and forth on this.

I would never buy a helmet from Dick's either, unless I was just riding around the block or something.
have a look at Virginia tech's helmet testing. Get something with MIPS technology.
If not, I mean, any helmet is better than no helmet.

The Giro Revel in the OPs link is rated only a 3 star.

MIPS tech safety is not proven. That said, if the price was the same or close with MIPS, why not.

Any helmet sold in US has to pass the same basic tests. The rest is weight, ventilation, additional protection like MIPS. I usually replace my helmets after about 3 seasons of use in the sun, sweat etc.. It should be replaced right away if you had a crash.

I have always heard 5 years from manufacturing date, which should be on a sticker inside the helmet. I have been told that for both bicycle and motorcycle helmets. I got a great deal on a MIPS helmet from Dicks a few months back.
