Playon is having a sale on their software (Listed at $70 normally can be found on sale for $30) which allows you to download shows from streaming services like Roku Channel, Netflix, Vudu, CBS, Amazon Video and many others.

I personally enjoy this software as you can have it download shows that are soon to be removed from online services (The Office, Friends, Etc) for personal storage

Isn't this completely not legal?

Also Likely against TOS of the streaming services. Might be at risk for account suspension, just because they haven't enforced yet doesn't mean they won't.

How will they even detect you? It uses a web browser to get the stream.

Not to stir up trouble but there's really no way a streaming service could know you're doing it. On their end all they see is that you're playing their content on your computer, they have no way of telling whether that content is being recorded or not. If you start trying to actually download their streams that's one thing (that won't work anyhow) but what Playon offers isn't really something streaming services can trace. I'm also not sure it's illegal, but it's definitely against most streaming sites terms of service. They would likely enforce it if they could but again, there's really no way they can know who's doing what with the content they're watching on their computer.

Not reputable, buyer beware.

I bought a "lifetime" subscription from PlayOn in the past. Six months later, they rebuilt their API, drew up arbitrary distinctions between past and current builds of their platform, reframed all prior lifetime subs as "basic" licenses, and locked further product updates behind a new "premium" lifetime sub that previously didn't exist.

And all that BS was before their product pivoted to operating in sketchy legal space. PlayOn and MediaMall are bad business.

If you're interested in an alternative, check out Channels DVR [getchannels.com], which costs $80 per year.

It's legal, for personal use, just like DVRs and VCRs are legal. However, as was mentioned, it is against the terms of use for most streaming video services.

I've had this for years and it generally works great. The only issue I've had was when my old PC got too old and would peg the CPU at 100% and stop recording. I've always looked at it like my old VCR, it's not like I'm selling or making money off their content. Just saving it for later.

Channels DVR is excellent, I use it, but it's not doing the same thing as Playon.

Was this the cloud or desktop version? My post was for the desktop version.

Same thing happened to me, poor business practices.

To me as well. I looked at it as lesson-learned and won't make the same mistake again.
