What firmsb01 says is completely untrue. If direct drive was always better, you wouldn't see any $1k+ TTs with belt drive.

The reality is that both have their advantages, and there's much more than just the drive type that determines a good TT.

A direct drive is generally more durable, starts up faster, and has more consistent speed. You can also scratch with it if you happen to be interested in that. For these reasons, it's good for DJing. The disadvantage is that you get more vibration in your music since the motor is much closer to the record and needle.

A belt drive has an elastic belt which wears out and needs to be replaced over time, but because the belt separates the platter from the motor, vibrations from the motor are dampened and you get less motor noise when playing your record so it's more applicable to audiophile use.

Both drive types are widely used, so you need to look at your use case and the other specs and features of the TTs to determine which is better.

As for comparing this to the LP120X, I'm inclined to say you should keep the LP120X, especially if you got a good deal. It has pitch control, a better cartridge, and USB port for digitizing records.

Which 3rd party site? I seem to be unable to find it. Thanks!

No. The one you mention is direct drive which is always better than belt drive.
Thanks! I'll keep my LP120X order then.
