PSA - for current PLEX subcribers and Free account users - Free movies online via plex app and web site YMMV

Sorry if this has already been posted:

I just received an email from PLEX: that there is free access to 100's of movies for CURRENT PLEX PASS Holders. This works in the PLEX APP ON NVIDIA SHIELDS (Scroll to the very bottom of your menu, look for "Movies and TV on Plex"and it works if you follow the link and login via a web browser.

Granted these are not first run, just released movies but free is free so I'm just putting it out there. It appears at the beginning there may be a short commercial (like on youtube) but after that, the movie starts to play.It appears this is ad supported so there will be commercials.

In today's world, anything free is (or additional to what you are already paying) is a slickdeal.

Goodluck

*Edit; (Thanks Monkeybiz)

Plex's new offering doesn't come with a price, but it does come with ads. Even if you're a Plex Pass subscriber, which unlocks numerous features for streaming and managing a personal collection, these new movies and TV shows will still be punctuated by ads. Plex says it will serve "only about one-third the amount of ads you'd expect on cable television" and that while some movies and TV shows will be geo-restricted, the "vast majority" of content will be available worldwide.

I got a pop up on the tv earlier & I'm not a paid member. I just dismissed it thinking it was a amazon thing forgetting I had plex going. Ya long day & really didn't look at it lol

Today, the service will feature both pre-roll ads and traditional ad breaks, but Plex promises an ad load that's 50%-60% less than what you'd otherwise find on broadcast television https://www.engadget.com/2019/12/...-tv-shows/

Not sure what's special about this compared to Amazon (their subchannels like IMDB), Vudu, Roku, Pluto (slightly different, but still), and the numerous free changes on Roku.

Not a bad thing to have more options, but don't they all end up having pretty much the same content?

Can you dvr them is a good question? Also I hope they never try and put ads in front of our content, as that would suck.

My thoughts exactly. I'm glad to have the option, but really, this is yet another sign of Plex selling out.

On that note, has anyone figured out how to get Plex plugins working on Roku again?

What I've noticed is that it is going back to the days of a particular content being available on a certain 'channel', except replace 'channel' with 'streaming service'. It's the same game in a new distribution pattern. I fully expect more than half of these services to consolidate under a couple of umbrellas in a few years. So in another 10 years, we'll be back to channels again. LMAO

Now, what is interesting is how content providers utilize multiple platforms simultaneously. Like for example, on pluto tv they have a 007 'James Bond' channel. Well, now on prime you have all the same 007 movies for free without ads and many times in 4k (which looks quite awesome). What I've learned is that if one platform has it for free with ads, another platform like netflix or prime might have it without ads.

Nevermind, I had to first start a movie through the pc browser for it to show on the fire stick.

I made a plex account years ago but never used it. Like someone else pointed out, options are always good. It's not too much effort to add it to my Nvidia Shield TV.

And for those people who say their time is worth so much. I'd love to see their W2 and mortgage /rent statement. Comments like that are usually made by teenagers with no true respect for money. Just my .02
