Used to own these, they are nice headphones but need a quality amp to shine (I used with a monolith liquid spark). I found the stock ear pads to be a bit too stiff but YMMV.

Pro-tip: Call Harman Parts directly and ask to order the 65th Anniversary Pads for these. Look online for the part number (headfi, Reddit). The Annie pads are memory foam and non-angled, so they improve the bass. They cost like ~$80 but turn these into the K7XX when on.

With both sets of pads you basically get 2 pairs of excellent cans for $200, and can swap easily depending on what you are doing.

Also consider getting a mini-xlr to female 3.5mm jack for these (I got one off amazon). This lets you hotswap with standard 3.5mm cables or use something like the vmoda boom pro if you need a mic.

Alternatively, they can be had from amazon.co.uk for $112 incl. S&H. Advertised price 85.50 GBP, at checkout drops to 71.25 GBP + 10.92 GBP S&H, which comes out to $112.29 with Amazon's currency converter. Possibly lower with your bank's conversion rates. Warranty service will be restricted to Europe, which may turn some off, but if there's a problem with the product during the returns period, Amazon will pick up the return shipping.

Are these identical to the K7xx from Massdrop? If so this is about a $50 discount, right?

Not identical, I believe these ones have a slighter larger sound stage with the k7xx's having more bass

I like this set of headphones. Very balanced and comfortable to wear. If you like boomed bass, this is not your style. However, for someone who appreciates clarity and has a decent amplifier, this model is worthwhile to consider. Sounds stage is very open as well.

Used k702 are usually priced around $100-150, FYI.

I also tried Q701 and K7xx. They are very similar to K702, though 702 seems to have a little bit more roll-off on bass. I ended up keeping K702 and sold other two sets...

This post comparing all 700 series could be helpful too:

Love my AKGs. So balanced. Huge sound stage. For the price, it's a no brainer for those in the market for open HP.

These are famous for their great sound stage, but also notorious for needing an amp.

slightly different. 7xx was the same as 702 65th, which is different from 702. I would consider the 7xx slightly better, but this is a good deal

I have the K701, and let me tell you... they are boring. AKG's greatest headphone was the K501. If I knew they would never make another headphone like it, I would've bought 5 of them for spares.

Do you have any suggestions or resources to explain which type of headphone design would be best for me?

I wish this was the K701... For whatever reason the K701's doubled in price over the last few years
