I didn't want Alcantara or Platinum but at $699 I'll get over it.

anyone compare this to xps 13? any noticeable plus/minus?
Just bought the Surface Laptop 3 after using a dell XPS 13 for 4 years. However, I did go with the all metal chassis rather than the Alacantra which slightly changes things.

Also, in real life, the footprints between XPS and SL3 are basically identical. Battery life is rated to be 1hr longer on SL3 but once again, in reality you're not going to notice any major difference between the two

Reasons why I chose to switch to SL3 instead of buying another XPS?

1) Screen ratio on SL3 is more appealing. Feels way larger than the same size screen on XPS
2) Windows Hello Face recognition on SL3 is simply amazing
3) trackpad on SL3 is far better than XPS
4) While I enjoyed my time with the XPS, I also had a stupid amount of quality issues with it and Dell offered very little assistance with fixing basic things that were wrong with the laptop from the first day that I received it (trackpad wasn't responsive half the time or the cursor would glitch around even when nothing was touching trackpad, and some charging issues)

There is the microsd card slot in back, too. Add another 1TB if you wish.
Surface Laptop 3 does not have a microsd slot...

I considered this machine but cancelled my order for these reasons:
Wide bezels, large in dimensions, lacking TB3

It's significantly wider than XPS due to the screen ratio:

Surface Laptop 3 13.5"
12.1" x 8.8" x .57" (308 mm x 223 mm x 14.5 mm)

XPS 7390:
Front 11.88 x 7.84 x 0.31 in (301.76 x 199.24 x 7.80 mm)
Rear 11.88 x 7.84 x 0.46 in (301.76 x 199.24 x 11.63 mm)

Test it at your local store if you can, or watch some YouTube videos to see you like it.
The aspect ratio is a plus. 3:2 screens are better for most productivity tasks (web browsing, Office, reading, photo editing, etc.). 16:9 screens are only better for watching/editing widescreen video.

For $699 this. Unless you have youthful eyes and you need the note taking ability.
The Surface 7 is a totally different niche than the Surface Laptop.

Surface Laptop is for those that have their machines on the desk all day long, like at work, so they never need the flexiblity of a tablet the 7 is. They simply want a stable, slim laptop that they can move here and there, then sit down and work the hours away.
The Surface Laptop has the 1 advantage over the 7, which is a user-swappable SSD for this price range (at the upper end, it can run a faster GPU than the 7 only if you go to the 15" model). The inability to open 180 degrees can be an issue for some trying to get a good view while eliminating the glare.

The Pro 7 is the ultimate super-light, portable, tablet/ebook reader/laptop replacement for those that love the Mac Air size, but need it in a PC. It pretty much replaces all work laptops short of those with NVidia GPU accelerated graphics needs (3D rendering, Adobe Premiere, etc) in the lightest, most-portable form-factor out there. Nothing else comes close, especially at the upper end with a i7 fully loaded. (The Chuwi clone, the Huawei and Samsung tablet PCs have been other attempts, but nothing really better.)
The one disadvantage is the smaller screen, which is fine for reading magazines in tablet mode - fonts are not too tiny to read - but may be too small for some needing a 15" screen (you can always connect a bigger monitor at work/home).
The other is that it is not the ideal on-lap form-factor due to the stand-design. Mobile and you're really going into tablet mode and holding it in your hands rather than trying to stick a skinny stand on your legs and cut off circulation (Here, the LG gram, Lenovo 2-in-1 PCs, etc. all work better on the lap).

.....

For me, given how I read a lot of web pages and ebooks/magazines, the Surface Pro is the best all-in-one laptop/tablet available. The lack of a Nvidia GPU means that if you had to pick just 1, the MSI 1660 laptops on sale here would be the more sensible choices given that you can't get a surface laptop or pro with a nvidia gpu that's fast enough (forget the AMD choices, slow, and not the standard).

If I wanted a lightweight laptop, I'd look at the LG Gram 13/14/15 series
https://www.lg.com/us/laptops/lg-...lim-laptop

Nothing like a 2LBS 15" laptop to shock friends and coworkers!! Seriously light, big, upgradable, and comfortable to hold and on the lap.

The LG Gram 17 is under 3lbs and has a 16:10 display.

Keep in mind the Surface Ryzen review is faster than this sale.

The Dell, obviously, if you're after faster and better upgradability.
But these are two totally different classes - one is a 13" for portability and lightweight = missing all the ports and features of the 15" standard laptop the Dell is.

....

At the 15" size, you're then comparing against the laptops with a Nvidia GPU like the $750-900

Makes very little sense to buy the Dell versus these two, which are even faster and have better specs.

::Lots of good info::
The one thing I'd mention about the Surface Pro is the lackluster battery life. I have a SP4 and that's been my biggest complaint. It can't manage a cross-country flight doing just simple word processing/office tasks while on battery saver and low brightness without the battery giving out. The charger is nice and light, but lots of airlines still don't have power in your seat (or it's malfunctioning, which seems to happen way too often). It also has a tendancy to fall off the back of the tray table due to the kickstand design (and, as you mentioned, it sucks to use directly on your lap). Other than those, an absolutely amazing device.

FYI this is a much better deal than the Macbook air and even the the entry configuration of Macbook Pro 13 inch with touch bar. Unless you're set on using Mac OS. This is a better CPU with much better iGPU for a lower price and superior build quality and keyboard.
superior build quality over makbook pro? Are you sure? I am really interested now

Very tempted to buy this and return the $499 Microsoft HP Envy.

Any thoughts?

So the dell is the better laptop to go with?
