Like I said, trade-offs. And you're comparing a good sale on the Lodge to regular-priced Staub/LC.

Personally, if someone asked me for a recommendation for a general use enameled dutch oven, I'd point them towards Cuisinart more than Lodge. The shape is just much better, and the price not much higher when they go on sale at sites like Woot.

ETA: the red and blue 7 Qt Cuisinarts are on sale for $59.99

To each their own I suppose. I do find it a bit funny that you consider a ~20% decrease in cooking area as "significantly smaller" but a ~40% increase in price is "not much higher."

I will say I also considered the Cuisinart but decided against it due to durability concerns (noted in ATK review and in a lot of the 1 star reviews on Amazon.) That being said, it seems like either would probably be a good choice for most people as they both get good reviews from ATK/wirecutter/amazon.

this is a really good price on a good Dutch oven. for the haters of course it's not quite as good as a staub or a le crueset, but to all but the most discerning chef this is as good at a quarter the price

You don't need to be a discerning chef to notice the curvature at the bottom of the pot (where the side walls join the bottom). For dutch ovens of the same size, you get a significantly smaller flat cooking surface than those from Staub/LC.

Lodge is certainly a very good budget option (I love my 7 Qt oval Lodge); just be aware of what you're giving up.

The decrease in cooking area is permanent, whereas the increase is price can be spread across many years. Twenty bucks isn't much of an upcharge when we're talking about something that may last for decades.

I see the Cuisinart ones at T.J. Maxx around me all the time (91011). Can't remember the price but I think it is the same. Thanks for the review been debating which budget one to get. Do you know if the Le Crueset factory store ones are any good?

Correct, they did list both in the magazine. Both the Cuisinart and Lodge were recommended. The Cuisinart was dinged for being a little bit less durable and the Lodge was dinged for being a little heavier (18.1 lb vs 16.7lb for Cuisinart) and having a smaller cooking surface which could lead to having more batches if the dish you are preparing has meat that needs to be seared.

The Cuisinart was listed as the best buy but that recommendation was made based on the prices they purchased them at which is $83 for the Cuisinart and $79 for the Lodge. The only "Highly recommended" pot in the test was the Le Creuset.
