From gen 3 and up, not much. You just want to avoid anything lower than 3. https://philipshue.com/thread/phi...fferences/

I'm hoping they don't even sell gen 2 anymore so I went ahead with the google store deal
Does the same go for the plain white bulbs? The only ones that fit my ceiling fan with a glass dome are the Gen 1's because they are shaped like a normal light bulb. The newer generations are slightly too tall to fit.

Okay, one other question. Are these that much better than the TP-Link or Lifx (or the GE bulbs in sale this week)?

I'm just starting to try to put together a (Google) smart home, and the main obstacle is my wife, wondering why we'd need bulbs that cost more than 3 bucks...

Just stop. Come on please really stop. Do you know how much Hue products I have bought in a week. I'm already convincing my wife "what? No, of course those aren't new hue boxes of lights, those are the ones I got last year remember?."

Ok so I've bought 3 (3 light kits), 1 (4 light kit), 3 (light strips), 4 ( 2 play light kits). Got typings this out hurts my soul.
So maybe control yourself and stop buying stuff you don't need? It's not a good deal if you don't need it.

Jumped on way too many of these recently, and a few extra Bridges. What does one do with these, are these easily resold?

Ahh man you have to be kidding me. I just bought this for $120 from Best Buy yesterday and gifted it to someone. Any chance they would refund me the $20 difference if I asked them today?

I used to resell the bridges on Craigslist but that was years ago. Might not be much of a market now

Do I need to use the wall switch for these? Or can it be done completely from my phone? I do not plan on setting up anything with the wall switches as I am renting a condo currently. Thanks!

I've yet to see another smart bulb with the same combo of color saturation, brightness, reliability, platform agnosticism, and developer support than the hue line. The app is fast, the accessories like the switch are genius, and they play so nice with each other. Want a lightstrip? They got it. Accent lighting for your gaming monitor that syncs with colors on screen with zero lag? Check. Outdoor lighting? Multiple options. All on the same bridge, easy af to set up.

You might buy cheaper bulbs now, but what if the app sucks? What if you want a different form factor like what I mentioned above? I definitely don't want to juggle multiple smart light ecosystems/bridges/apps.

I think Phillip's knows this and thats why they're so expensive. I just never buy them unless they're on sale like this.

Phone, Google Home, Homepod, Echo all work. Also the switch doesn't have to be wall mounted. It actually comes off the wall plate magnetically and can be used as a remote standalone. Its very useful for when your phone isn't at the ready.

As a comparison, Fry's has a fox&summit wifi enabled, alexa/google assistant compatible, dimable, white/colored led bulb for ~$10. No hub required.

I have Hue lights throughout the house and the remote switch is very handy, especially if you frequently entertain or need WAF/kid-friendlyness. Guests won't have the Hue app, and sometimes it's hard to remember to shout what you want across the room to Google/Alexa.

What I ended up doing was buying these Samotech SM-213 plate covers [amazon.com]. They screw on over your switch so no permanent modifications. They effectively cover the switch so it always stays up, and then you just use the remote like a switch.

I love the remotes because you can program four-five actions to happen with consecutive taps of the on button. Mine turns on last state, sets the lights to evening/warm white, and has a few fun color profiles built in to the third and fourth taps.
