Um...Brewing my own means driving to the carry-out and pulling the Bud Light Lime out of the fridge. On a wild night, I go with Killians.

Yeah, I'm kind of the opposite of Mav, I just wing everything. So far it's all worked out ok. I know though that to become a better brewer though I really should pay more attention to the details. For example. It called for 1 1/2 oz of Perel @ 60 and 1/4 @ 15. I got 2 1 oz packets with the kit so I did roughly 1 1/2 at start then just dumped the rest in@ 15min. I figured I didn't really need that 1/4 floating around in my fridge and it wouldn't hurt the taste. I could see Mav counting the number of pellets in the little baggie to make sure he got it divided up accurately into 1/4s

You got it. I have a digital scale that will get right down to the 10th of an ounce. laugh out loud

Max, I bet your OG was either 1.066 or 1.067, so congratz! Looks like you were right on. What you really need to do is figure out is how to properly read your hydrometer. Check for yourself, go get your hydrometer, find the 17 where you thought your OG was rotate the hydrometer and look at the other scales/numbers on the same level as the 17. You will probably realize that there is a different scale that reads 1.066~1.067 on the same level.

If I find a pic online I'll edit and add it to this post.

Cheers!

I am now officially making beer. At 10pm I had lots of bubbling in the airlock when I got home. Cleaned about 60 bottles and went upstairs around 12 and now the airlock overflowneth. shake head

This may not be good. If you build up too much pressure you could blow the airlock or lid off.
Which kind of airlock do you have?
Exhibit A

Exhibit B

If it's exhibit A, and you have plastic tubing such as for racking, you can set it up into a blow off like this picture.

Do like you see there and put the other end into a jug, jar, or something holding water/sanitizer solution.
Should look like this.

House temp 61? EEK!

My wife would be "frozen solid" with a house temp like that.

What size fermenter do you have? 5 gallon carboy? Plastic bucket?
