Why is Slickdeals censoring deals?

373 63 December 30, 2019 at 07:24 AM
I got in a while ago on a deal for a USB C charger that was the best deal I've ever seen on one, with 60W PD charging for only $11. However, it was posted as a comment in a thread for another charger that wasn't as good or as cheap, and there were references in the comments to the fact that Slickdeals has a feud with the manufacturer or seller and that's why the mods were secretly deleting all deals for the charger.

Then I saw on another deals site, that there was an unbelievable deal on the charger three days ago for only $6: https://www.urlhasbeenblockeds.co...ll-charger

However, this wasn't anywhere to be found on Slickdeals, presumably because of this feud. I missed the deal because I use Slickdeals as my primary deals site.

Why is Slickdeals censoring deals? If I have to be worried about deals being censored and I have to supplement by going to another site, then Slickdeals is useless to me and I might as well just use a different site, even though I've been coming to Slickdeals for over 10 years now.

So what's the deal?

External links to certain sites have been blocked by the Slickdeals administration. The following might be reasons why the link has been blocked:

Link shortening & masking sites such as urlhasbeenblocked.com are blocked to prevent people from hiding links. Please link directly to the site instead.
Spam and/or referral sites that are posted often.
Sites that self promote their own bad deals.
Other deal sites.
Bad sites in general.
We do not block merchants because of monetary reasons. If a merchant is blocked, it is usually after multiple bannings of different accounts shilling their own deals. Please do not come up with conspiracy theories."

Not a single one of those reasons could be applicable to the urlhasbeenblocked charger I'm talking about, as it is sold on Amazon.

So which one of those reasons is why the charger has been blocked? It's absurd that even in this forum the name of the charger keeps getting censored such that we can't have a discussion about it.

Do you understand what a poor user experience it is that I missed an amazing deal, the best deal in history on a USB-PD charger, because Slickdeals keeps deleting and censoring all mention of this manufacturer?

If a merchant shills a lot on here they would get blocked.

Does Slickdeals not see what a problem this is for users?

So because the merchant shills their products, even when there are later legitimate deals on the products that are the best deals in history on an entire class of product, Slickdeals users don't get to see the deals?

After over a decade of coming to Slickdeals, I am outraged and prepared to leave over this. Does Slickdeals see this as a problem whatsoever? From your curt responses, I'm guessing the answer is no.

I am sorry that your deals had to be removed. We do care about member experience above all.

We take shilling seriously because it hurts our reputation and deceives members. It's an ongoing battle to ferret them out.
3rd party Amazon merchants were a fast growing opponent in that arena. Members complained a lot, it took up more and more of a ratio of mod time to deal with.
Several teams here spent over 11 months analyzing, documenting and discussing what we could do to help keep the best deals showing and yet cut back on the worst offenders.

We feel that we came up with the fairest cut off point in order to achieve the best user experience possible considering the battle we faced.
Yes a few deals may be missed and some shills sneak through which is why we are always working on a better mouse trap.
