My understanding is that it is a left and right speaker that includes an atmos speaker add-on. I could be wrong though.

There are 4 speakers in this deal: 2 bookshelf speakers built to produce 3D sound. According to Pioneer website, they are based on the Andrew Jones SP- BS22-LR speaker and Jones added, after the success of his Elite atmos enabled bookshelf speaker, the innovative upward firing concenteric speakers (fancy way of saying the smaller tweeter fits inside larger woofer). These will work in the front or back.

The 2nd pair are add-ons, also with concentric speakers aimed upwards and but inserted into a much smaller cabinet, built to fit exactly on the Andrew Jones SP-BS22-LR and the floorstanding SP-FS52, if you have them already. I suppose you only need one pair or the other to have 3D sound (if you have the right receiver and media to play), but I have read that 4 is better than 2. But that would require a special receiver, a 9.1.4. Those arent cheap.

There's a pioneer model VSX-LX303 for $399 on Amazon and other places that has option for 4 height channels. It's a 9.2 channel so can configure 7.2.2 or 5.2.4. There's a handful of affordable recievers in that $400-500 range that offer same configurations

You have read correctly about 4 vs 2 height channels. I recently added 2 additional ceiling speakers myself achieving 5.2.4 and made an incredible difference. In addition to those side to side object based height effects with just the 2 height channels such as a plane flying overhead, front to back/panning effects is unlocked. It really is awesome when it all comes together watching a potent atmos movie.

We are about to finish the basement and I don't want to go full theater but would like some ceiling drops for future speakers.

We now steam most movies - do you know if atmos is mostly limited to physical media?

I know it's out of stock, but for future reference, do you guys know if there is a difference between tower vs. bookshelf speakers? Going to be doing a 5.1.2 setup.
