I usually see if Sweetwater carries the brand and if not that usually means it is not up to their standards. This isn't always the case but I'm not finding any quality reviews I can trust either.

MXL's other mics are very well rated - even ones at a lower price point. While I imagine part of this mic's appeal is the styling, I doubt MXL just phoned it in with the quality of the innards. I imagine it's just a "recase" of one of their other mics to look cooler and maybe charge more.

If you need something to look at, this mic is $30 less (retail) and has phenomenal reviews:

I can't imagine the MXL 700 being worse and I'd wager it's probably a lot better if the retail of the MXL 700 is anything to go off of, and it looks way cooler.

EDIT: There seems to be quite a lack of information about this mic, even on MXL's website, but I found the manual: http://www.mxlmics.com/manuals/90...es/700.pdf

I'm somewhat tempted to buy this to replace my at2020 but it's probably not worth the hassle.

MXL is a good brand. No information on this particular mic but they make fairly great quality budget stuff.

I have several MXL mics...they are good budget mics. The MSRP is way inflated, but this is a decent price if you are in the market. Be forewarned, this is a condenser mic...you will need 48V phantom power for this to work.

Heck, I'll sell anyone my MXL V69 for $99 if they pay shipping. It's cool, but doesn't fit my voice as well as an AKC, so it's mostly unused. Doesn't need phantom power as it's got it's own tube amp.
