Costco gives 2% back on Costco purchases.
Sams gives 1% back on Sams purchases.

That's probably the more important difference. I spent about $4000 at Costco in 2019. That's $80 back compared to $40 back at Sams.

Both give 3% back on dining and travel. Neither has foreign transaction fees.

Sams gives 5% cash back on gas on first $6,000 per year.
Costco gives 4% cash back on gas on first $7,000 per year.
If you buy $7000 worth of gas, that's $310 back at Sams vs $280 back at Costco, $30 difference.

Sams credit card is issued by synchrony, one of the worst low-end issuers you can get. Costco credit card is issued by Citi, which is racing to become a low-end, bottom feeding bank. Walmart is already there, with their bottom of the barrel CapitalOne product.

Why not get a nice card from a nice bank? You know, first-rate issuers like Amex, Chase, etc.

They only have Sam's club in my area. No costco. But if given the choice I would choose Costco every time. The deals and variety and customer service are just so much better at Costco. The 1% extra on gas at Sam's is nice but you're probably gonna spend more shopping at Costco and get more cash rewards in the end.

Where I live, Sams club and Costco are two minutes apart from each other.

Sams has been open around here for about 30 years (I first joined when the were PACE, but I digress).

Since Costco opened 8-9 years ago, I have completely abandoned Sam's.

In my experience, Costco just does everything better. It's cleaner, has nicer stuff, friendlier staff, even the parking spots are bigger.

1% more on fuel, sure isn't gonna compel me to rejoin, especially since my primary car now is a hybrid.

About once a year, I do have my Brother in Law, pick up a 1500 pack of Sweet~N~Low, they just don't carry that item at my Costco.

Nice first post though, thumbs up and repped. Welcome to SD!

As reference, my annual Costco rebate is in the $1,000 range.

Why would you choose to support a nasty walmart corporation for a tiny difference in cash back? I hope to never step foot inside a Sam's again...just doesn't compare at all!

Because this is slickdealsSmilie No monthly fee cards from Amex or Chase are not getting close to cashback rates. Also Amex is not widely accepted in some countries. If you get only one card dont get Amex. But I am sure many Slickdealers have multiple cards. Costco is a good one with 4% on gas and 3% on dining. no international fees.
