I'm custom building ours with my woodworking brother-in-law and you're right. The shiplap alone (from Lowe's) is over $100 alone. Furniture grade plywood (Baltic Burch or maple) is $70+ (not from Lowe's) per sheet. It's going to be $400-500 in materials alone + sweat equity when it's all said and done, and we're not building anything super sophisticated. If you don't need something permanent, this seems like a decent deal.
I built a 96' one similar to what OP was claiming and it's nowhere close to $50. I shiplap panels and substituted 3/4 MDF instead of Sandeply since I had extras laying around (regret that due to the unholy mess) and even then,it was at least 300 bucks. This would have been a cheaper route to go when you factor in materials and time for sure. Amortize the cost of tools, filler, nails, paint, primer, laquer...and it gets higher.

Anyone else scan this post's title more than two times before realizing a 'hall tree' is a thing? The things you learn on Slickdeals...

It is more than likely particle board veneer / melamine. As far as plywood for $70; that is probably a 5x5 sheet. I always have people wanting me to build them a version of stuff in my house; they have no idea on how much materials cost.

Personally I wouldn't snub what it's made of; most of your laminate counter tops are particle board and they get abused way more than this would daily.

We have a hall tree built-in to our mudroom (solid hardwood), and I kept looking at this to potentially put across from it... then I noticed the 211lb weight limit for the bench, and I think that tells me everything I need to know about build quality... I weigh around 200lbs, and it's ridiculous if I'm pushing the limits of a piece of furniture like that (I couldn't even sit on it with my 6 year old son)...
