So....are all lenses proprietary? I want to get a mirrorless and I am deciding between canon and sony. Do each of those require vendor specific lenses?
Sony ftw

Would it be a worthwhile upgrade for an old T2i? Can I use the same lenses or are special ones required for mirrorless?

Would be a big upgrade for you. You need an adapter to use the old Ef-s lens

I'd like to buy a camera for my wife but know nothing about this sort of thing. Anybody have tips? Mirrorless or DSLR? We are going to Prague, Hungary, and Belgium this summer
Jumping in now, definitely get mirrorless.

I have the M6 and it is my daily driver. I also have an A7ii but the smaller footprint makes it easier to carry and less intimidating.

This is the lens i use 90% of the time on the M6
18-55 STM Kit Lens - $120 (Last One) [ebay.com]

If you don't mind prime lenses, this is a good compact low light lens.

Canon EF-M 22mm f/2.0 STM Pancake Lens [ebay.com]

EF to EFM Adapter. If you have Canon DSLR Lenses a budget lens adapter.

MK-C-AF4 AF Auto Focus Lens Mount Adapter Ring for Canon EOS EF-S to EF-M [ebay.com]

For $300 this is a warm deal. The M50 with kit lens for under $300 IMO was a better deal. (Holiday promo) The camera may be a level below the M6 but the technology is a generation newer. Better AF and minor IQ improvements plus 4K and viewfinder.

I guess it would offer a better sensor (low light), autofocus and video, but is the performance similar to the Txi? I remember someone complaining it was slow to operate (due to the AF, I'd guess)

Thanks to Childish Mr President but isn't that No Free Shipping
and now a days, the universally featured
Tax for all, even items sold by Out of State sellers or Old used items (That have payed the tax on original sale, Double taxation for benefit of legislations who CAN),
make your shopping days like an urge to PASS IT ALL?!

I certainly prefer to get into a local shop, put hand on item I want to buy and carry it home with me, when feeling the gratitude of supporting my neighborhood business, NOW that there is no advantage of buying on line, even missing the opportunity to leave home and see the changes in neighborhood!!!!!!
GONE THE INTERNET NICE BUYING DAYS.
You have literally no idea what you are talking about.

I have a 6d with 24-70 L lens that I use mostly for my kids - been thinking about getting EOS R just for new eye AF. I know it's crop sensor among other things but man $300 is tempting vs $1600.
This camera won't have nearly the same feature set that the R has other than being mirrorless.
