GPU's Dying/Whining

1 January 12, 2020 at 04:25 AM
Recently I took out my PSU out of my PC to use in a second build. I put a new PSU (EVGA something) in my main PC. Since putting in a new PSU, my GPU (GTX 1070) has started making whining noises. I thought it might be due to the new PSU so I ordered a second new PSU (RMX650) to try in my build. Same sound happens with the second new PSU. Today I was playing a game and my computer randomly shut down and I saw some sparks in the case come out of the GPU (I think it was from the GPU anyway.)

I took out the GPU and tried turning on my PC using the iGPU, it worked. I put in a spare GPU (GTX 1060) into my build and it works, but the GPU makes a similar noise to the one that died today. I played a few hours on the spare GPU. Any ideas what could be wrong?

I also tried putting my original PSU back into my PC and the spare GPU still makes the sound.

GPU do not make noise I believe you mean the fan? If possible see if you can take the fan off the heatsink and see if it turns or is clogged with dirt/dust?

Is it possible you've left off a psu connector or accidentally grounded something to the chassis through all of these iterations? If it happens with multiple PSUs and multiple GPUs there's something else wrong; if it makes sparks then it's very wrong. Could a spare PSU cable be rubbed bare and touching a fan?

1070 whines, like, all the time or in certain applications?

RMX650 should be plenty for 1070... do you have o'bunch of other stuff plugged into ur system?

Were you using any power adapters to power the GPU?
