Ignorance showing here, but why would one buy this 65" version for $1500 compared to LG OLEDs that have been $1500 recently?

Personal choice. Some people want a brighter TV and/or a lower risk panel. I think the real deal is on the 75".

OLEDs excel in blacks and infinite contrast because of their superiority in handling blacks. LEDs however can currently get much brighter somewhere around 2-4 time brighter. Blacks however are not as good so contrast is not as good as OLEDs. Some people prefer brighter screens.

Hmm, I told my friend to buy the 75" X950G for $1899 shipped including tax... This tv shows $2163 shipped and taxed to Texas. $263 difference.

That's pretty much what I'm trying to decide on...is the price difference worth going to the Z9f.

Nice price on the 75". That would be the one to get, way more dimming zones than the 65" (288 vs ~100), it's an easy pick over similarly priced 75" X950G (which I've read has around 60 dimming zones). This TV can get extremely bright, HDR highlights will pop, but given the rather low native contrast ratio (in part due to the X-Wide Angle filter - you sacrifice contrast ratio for improved viewing angles), dark room performance leaves something to be desired, particularly while watching HDR content. If you are at all interested in the TV, I recommend watching the HDTV Test review of the 75" model:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mlTElC2z2A

I was considering this model while looking for a new TV last fall, and ultimately went with a 65" LG E9. Having perfectly dark black bars really ups the immersion while watching movies in a pitch black home theater room. Although if my media room had less controlled lighting and a larger seating area, I may have gone with the 75" Z9F instead. Lack of HDMI 2.1 is also worth mentioning if you care about new features like ALLM/VRR, but the TV does have eARC.
