You gotta know what you're getting with the Fire tablet and if you're OK with it. If you want certain apps, you may have to end up installing the Google Playstore because they are not available on the Amazon Appstore. It's pretty simple, but requires more steps. The screen is...more or less "fine." The audio is more or less "fine." I have the 2018 version and for the price I paid and that I use it STRICTLY for media consumption on vacation, it works great. I used to read comics on it when I had a Comixology sub and that worked great too.

The battery life is also surprisingly good, you can go through a ~2 hour movie and only burn ~15% battery (75% brightness) But, the tablet (remember I have the 2018 version) is painfully slow compared to my experience with my other devices (PS4, Note 8, PC, etc.) Does it make it unusable? Not at all. Again, all I literally do is watch movies on it when on vacation, I can spare the extra few seconds as stuff loads in.

All in all, I didn't buy it to use it as a tablet, and it doesn't sound like you are either, but if you even think like "oh, maybe I can use it as a tablet here and there" from my experience with the 2018 version, with how slow it is, I never EVER used it for any other function other than watching stuff. But for media consumption? The price is almost impossible to beat.
This guy nailed it. I think I did a trade in and got it for about $70. Great for movies on the plane, slips into carryon easy. It gets used as a Kindle a lot as well. I tried show mode for a bit and it wasn't for me. It cost $70, not disposable, but if something does happen to it I can replace it easily.

I have this tablet from the BF sales (used a 25% off coupon from prime day) and it is such a huge improvement from the 2017 model it isn't funny. Charges substantially more quickly, has usb-c, and it feels 2-3 times faster.

I used fire toolbox to remove bloat and install Google apps, and it works fantastically for YT, reading manga, and other media consumption.

It runs for at least 2 days with even aggressive video watching.

Be aware of its limitations if you're looking to just hack it into a decent android tablet. It has no vibration, auto portrait when maxing out a YT video doesn't work, and you'll need to be on top of your game to prevent amazon updates (even with blocking turned on)

ETA Prime over on youtube reviewed this tablet https://youtu.be/Yl7wmFiCvCk as well as a special review for emulation (his speciality) https://youtu.be/9OjjaXoyCiQ
I'm very tempted to get one for emulation but i'm trying to hold out as i don't have a trade in and i'm cheap in general.

How is this compared to a budget Samsung or iPad tablet?
It's hard to compare them because the Samsung and Apple are significantly more expensive. Apple doesn't have anything south of 300$ for an iPad and Samsung actually sort of has a new budget tablet in the past year with decent specs but it's still around 200$ at the end of the day. It's hard to compare a fire tablet to those.

Like everyone says you gotta know what your getting a fire tablet for. I know certain apps it works great with and you can get by but if your a power user. Like I love my iPad I use the notes, calander, safari, various apps, pictures saved for my business in various folders.

The fire doesn't really have a note taking app built in like Apple does. And Samsung doesn't have as good as syncing and seemlessness between their phones and tablets as Apple does although you can do it. Or download Evernote and use that for your cloud based notes and reminders.

Temp root is available if anyone cares for that kind of stuff. Just don't update it out of the box.

The charging port always gets loose and eventually stops working after about 9 months.
have a kindle hdx since 2013, been perfectly fine with daily use up until now... battery is struggling a bit and have to have the charging cable plugged in with some pressure.

that said, 7 years of almost daily use is a pretty impressive effort.

Completely forgot about the $15 photo credit. Combining trade in credit (20%) and prime photo credit of $15 makes it a lot more tempting to me
Add some more sugar free sweeteners:

-- 20% off Amex promo use only 1 MR
-- Buy Amazon GC at grocery story with 5% cash back using Discover promo
-- 8% cash back from topca$hback on amazon devices

I have the 2017 version and hate this. Keep in mind that I have an older version of Fire OS running and have rooted the device so YMMV.

I had something burning through the battery within a day of idle use. It seems that most of the Amazon applications were causing this as after I removed them the issue went away. Internet is flaky at best with this. Sometime it works great, other times it disconnects. Both of these issues are common if you research it a little.

Anyone buying this I would urge to spend a little more to get a stock Android tablet or an iPad.
for internet wifi issue, set ip to static. I did that few days ago and its working well so far.
