If you put this lock on something, you are alerting thieves that there is something worth stealing inside and minimum effort needed to get to it.

Had one of these on my gym locker and had it broken into. I know locks are only to keep the honest people out, but at least a beefier lock would at least deter some thieves.

Doubtful. There are very few locks which are genuinely resistant to knowledgeable thieves (As the lockpickinglawyer has so often demonstrated). This is perfect for keeping 8-10 year olds from wandering through the locker room and making a mess, and pushing 16 year olds to steal stuff from the lockers without locks.

As a general rule I won't leave my phone or wallet or anything expensive in a gym locker. Just clothing. I'll either leave that stuff at home or carry it around with me in the gym.
