I got this card last year around this time and it came with 50K base points and 25K points for spending (I don't remember the exact amount, but it was significantly more than the 3K here) I think 10K, but it may have been even more in the first 6 months. Like others have said, this makes sense if you live near a United Hub as I do. Last year, I found flights from Newark to Fort Lauderdale for 5K points for each segment, so 10K round trip. I got 3 round trip tickets. 1 departure was late, and so they gave all passengers a $10 credit towards airport food (doesn't buy much) and a $50 voucher each. Although the 4 hour delay wasn't exactly pleasant, the $50 x 3 vouchers and 3 round trip tickets to Fort Lauderdale for 30K points was certainly worth it in my book.

I'm guessing oversea flights wouldn't go as far value wise
Quite the contrary, if you're flexible on flight dates 60k will get you a round trip throughout Europe

Little bonus for those possibly on the fence. The priority boarding (which is Group 2) is tied directly to your Mileage Plus number, which means priority boarding even if you don't use this card to book the flight. I'm required to travel on a corporate credit card and it's a nice little perk to still get priority. I'm sure it only applies to a small set of people, though.
I thought you had to book with this card to get all the benefits. So in your experience, when, you're still getting all the benefits of the card without using the card? Makes sense to just use CSR given the better reward earning

This card is a pretty good deal if you plan to fly on UA. I booked a cheaper BE fare which saved me close to $100 knowing my carryon and luggage will be covered. You will have to pay for assigned seats if you don't want to get assigned by UA. Saved $60 for round trip luggage, stayed in their lounge for a 3 hours layover, reimbursed $100 for Global Entry, and earlier boarding. I got 50K miles after spending $5K, which is their standard offer since I applied for the card right after seeing the best and cheapest flight for me was UA, waited anxiously for a week for the card to arrive and fortunately the fare didn't change in the meantime.
This mileage offer looks pretty similar to what they offer during their flights.
So you can bring a carry on with you even with BE fare if you have this card? I dont see that mentioned anywhere on the card perks. How does it work? It would be nice if I can book BE fare for my companion and myself and get the free checked bag as well as free carry on for the both of us. 6.6.0

The other benefits require the use of the card (25% off in-flight purchases, free check bags, etc). The one that doesn't require use of the card is the priority boarding - it gets tied to your Mileage Plus number.

Got it - and with priority boarding, you're allowed a carryon (helpful since I'm buying basic economy a lot). Thanks!

I've been debating this card for the longest time. Ultimately, I think the Amex Platnium is a better return for the AF, despite higher if you can use and legitimately value the benefits $1 for $1

How does this work for a family? Can you get priority boarding and free bags for spouse/kids?

What kind of moron gets an annual-fee airline rewards card with a 3k spend requirement when they can't afford to pay their bills?

I can only speak to my experience as a single traveler. I booked my flight with United using the Explorer card, make sure you have your mileage plus account number on the United account when you book. Right after you booked, you can go back to your reservation and see that your 1st luggage is free, that also include carry on since you are in boarding group 2. The BE boarding group is very last, those can't have carry-on.

according to this, you have to make sure to book your travel with your companion on the same reservation with the card, then both luggage and priority boarding are included.

For all other Basic Economy tickets, you're not allowed a full-sized carry-on bag unless you're a MileagePlus Premier member or companion traveling on the same reservation, the primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card or a Star Alliance™ Gold member. Everyone else who brings a full-sized carry-on bag to the gate will be required to check their bag and pay the applicable checked bag fee plus a $25 gate handling charge.

Thanks. I read the benefits link you posted, but they didn't mention anything about the carryon. I will see whether this is allowed in my future flights.

I signed up for 40K miles for $2K spend 3 weeks ago; anyone successful with calling in to take advantage of a new/better offer shortly after being approved?
Wife called them about the same matter and the rep told her she already took note in our account and please give them a call back when we hit 3K so that they can add another 20K into her account.
