Does it auto skip commercials? Can you fast forward, with full screen preview, to skip commercials? Can you start watching a recording while it's still recording? Do you have to subscribe to a guide service or is that free? TIA
No auto skip but you can fast forward with preview. Yes you can watch a recording while its still recording. There is a pretty good guide service built into the fire tv devices.

This has been out for awhile without a refresh. I want one but I'm wondering how close version 2.0 is.

I suspect/hope version 2 will support ATSC3. I'm waiting for that reason.

More expensive than previous deals.
Yet still way cheaper than a time machine.

This is the 1TB HDD version, not the 500GB version. There hasn't been a posted sale on the 1TB version since last August from bestbuy for $190.
It was $180 at the end of November.

You're not really comparing apples to apples there though. The HD Homerun doesn't include any storage built in, just the tuners. The Amazon UI is also way more advanced than the default HDHomeRun app, yet you still have to pay a yearly fee to use HDHomeRun's (or a one-time fee of at least $70 if you can catch a rare PLEX sale).
The HDHomeRun is still a great product and I've used it along with PLEX for a couple of years now, but the Recast definitely has it's own advantages as well, plus it's a bit easier to just plug-n-play.

I'll stick with Locast for $5/month (until it gets shut down).

I was wondering about Roku support and assuming none, given that this is an Amazon product. I've got HDHomeRun tuners driving Plex, and as a household that was loyal to TiVo for 17 years, it's been a really easy transition. This Fire DVR is a self-contained PnP solution though, which is nice if you aren't looking for something to manage and integrate with all of your own media.
Correct assumption - no ROKU support (though you can watch Prime Video on ROKU, go figure.).. We were loyal to TIVO as well, since seris2. I was thinking of going the HD home-run (we use PLEX and the fam is fine with using it for local movies) I was worried about HD homerun integration which is why I went with the plug and play FIRE. We have been happy with it overall, very happy when you consider how much we are not spending on cable.

Negligible difference between 720p and 1080i. Probably can't even tell the difference after transcoding for streaming.

Does not plex have auto skip feature. If you mix this with plex I can get ad free show.

Correct me if I am wrong.
