My use case for these is taking young kids to any event with lots of people. I pin them in their pockets. It doesn't replace actual parenting, but it's an easy backup. I've used it once in an amusement park when I turned around and my 5 year old was gone. I activate it on my phone and it rings like a classic cell phone. He was around the corner looking at the souvenirs. It turned a potentially multi-hour stressful recovery effort into a nonissue.

Reviews on these are horrible and it seems the newer ones are worse then the older ones in terms of functionality. Total pass.

I remember something about the latest iOS version restricting background location polling so 3rd party trackers like Tile won't work as good.

I've never owned one, but trying to figure out the practicality. So the cheapest one has a 200ft range...meaning it would only be useful in finding something lost within you house for example, right? If you lost something then drove off without realizing it, you would be SOL. Or does it track position the entire time until it goes out of range of your bluetooth?

I've used Tile's since they came out and I have to say that each generation gets slower and worse at finding the thing you lost.

Perhaps they are focusing on the "sell your location history" more now than the "find your item", but it takes more than a minute to connect to my lost item now, and sometimes I can be very close to the one I am seeking and have it report as "out of range."

I bought the four pack last year and I see this with every type of Tile.

If someone else's phone (with the app) comes into Bluetooth range of it while it's missing, it will alert you

Disclaimer I don't own one, but was about to buy this 2020 4 pack till I read up.

Conflicting reviews, The latest tile 2020 pack does not report last known location information per the reviews, but just activates the tile alarm, which means yes it has to be within bluetooth range of your phone or your SOL as you put it. There is a way to find lost items on a larger scale but its dependent on other people with phones having the tile app being within vicinity of your tile in which case it will ping it and report it back to you, seems like thats not standard but used in special cases.

Another person reported in their review that the latest tile (2020) was still reporting location of the tile, but it was no longer the last known one. Sometimes it would report a location it was at over a month ago instead of the last time it was pinged.

The above inconsistencies and seeing all the positive reviews were "paid" reviews made me pass on this.

In terms of functionality? They do the same thing they've always done -- provide a beacon when you lose the item it's connected to. I haven't seen the "horrible" reviews you speak of. Provide a link maybe?

Or perhaps you are talking about Tile's subscription service for some features? Those only add additional features. They don't take away the basic features, which for me, that's all I need. I'm very happy with my Tiles w/o a subscription. I haven't found anything worse about the 2020 models than the 2018 models and the wallet tracker is a slimmer and last longer.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware you could run them without a subscription.
