Just to be clear - this deal is good enough to be lukewarm, if you just replace the hard drive, memory, and screen? Because I have a Ferrari, if I swap out enough Honda parts.

I have a Nitro 5 but it's the i5+1050ti version. You can get them on the Acer refurb ebay store for $500, with a warranty. And mine came with a 256gb nvme for the OS, and I put a 2.5 SSD in for games. Expansion is very easy, panels pop open on the bottom for 2.5 sata/ssd and another for memory... not for the m.2 though, you'll be doing full-on open case surgery to get to that.

Great bargain game machines... but be warned, they are huge, hot, get loud under load, fairly heavy (6 lbs), have a terrible trackpad, a janky keyboard layout, and requires a giant power brick. I mean it is 3 times the size of my work Dell laptop's AC adapter, it's huge and weighs a pound+ by itself.

So... a 120hz screen upgrade for this? But why? Even with the 1050ti the only way I'm hitting 120 fps is 720p low. Playing 1080p requires every game I have tried to be on med or low settings to get to 60fps. To be fair I haven't tried Apex Legends but I have played BF5, Titanfall2, etc (mostly play strategy on it though, it's a good Civ laptop). RX560 vs 1050 TI are about the same

Not a bad deal. The HDD is painfully slow in this, and I'd definitely recommend another 8GB stick. But other than that it was fine. I used this on vacation to play WoW classic. The panel is pretty awful though. I did replace it with a 120hz. Could actually play apex legends reasonably well after the ram and panel upgrade. Though I bought this on their referb site and there was zero tax. Was also only $439, but they have raised the price on their recertified site 😬

There's an m2 slot available. Would have to move Windows over there somehow

No you can use it fine with stock parts. But to maximize experience that's what I did. I'd never suggest only 8GB on an AMD based laptop.

This is actually the best gaming deal for sub $500 you can find, and if portability isn't a huge factor (~6lbs, 1.1 inches thick) its a solid everyday laptop for a lot of people as well.

If you're going to compare it to cars, it's probably more like the modded Supra from the original Fast and Furious movie that took on a Ferrari in a drag race on PCH.

Except the original post implied that it's good, but only after replacing parts. If the hard drive is slow, then it's more like the fictional ten second Civic that had fictional parts overnighted so it could be a daily driver and also a dedicated drag car while actors shouted nonsense and gestured at gifs on a laptop in the front seat.

I hated that movie.

My brother bought one of these a year ago and I helped him add a M.2 SSD for Windows and another 8GB stick of RAM. He says it runs fine for FF14 and other games he's used it for. Reinstalling Windows on the SSD was super easy.
I didn't replace the screen though.

If you want to sweeten this deal and haven't used your "amex points 20% off promo at amazon", buy a bestbuy $250 giftcard in Amazon to get additional $50 off. You're like paying it for just $409.99+tax.
