I purchased an x950g and am frustrated with the blooming in dark scenes. Could I expect better performance from this unit?

Solid deal. I have been following prices on this model for 3 months and this is the best price i've seen so far. I ended up buying a Vizio PZX65 for $1099 (could have paid $999 on black friday) but at this samsung price, I might have jumped on the 65Q80 from Samsung. These TVs have a really excellent filter on the front that gives outstanding performance from wide viewing angles, much much better than any other LCD TV, very little color and contrast fade from a sideview. Also it supports HDMI 2.1 which one day soon will be important. Otherwise, my Vizio/Costco TV has some better specs (highest peak brightness, highest colorspace coverage of any TV, very high number of dimming zones = 384.)

All TVs with FALD have blooming. It's just impossible to avoid. Just get used to it. On static screens (like movie credits or titles) it has absolutely no effect on enjoyment of source material. On certain types of space or sunset scenes, or for letterboxed content, FALD helps A LOT imho. It's kind of a hack solution that helps sometimes but not always.

You are correct. No 2.1. Get a LG OLED for close to this price via GT.

To answer your question: Yes. But is the price of buying a new TV worth it? (assuming you are out of the return window?)

If it helps RTINGS.com called this exact "issue" out in their review of your x950g. https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x950g and go to the Local Dimming section.

Q80 review: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews...-q80r-qled
Again... go to the Local Dimming section.

It will do better with blooming at the expense of dimming the entire scene and crushing blacks. Pick your poison.
