EDIT: MIGHT BE DEAD NOW SO PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Looks like this is active again from June 7-August 10
Like last year SW has currently an unadvertised offer where you can change any flight booked for travel between the dates of 6/7-8/10 to another flight within +/-14 days for free. Southwest never charges change fees, but currently they will also waive the fare difference. You can essentially book a cheap flight around your dates of travel and then switch to a more expensive date of choice for absolutely free, no change fee or difference fee.

For example I made a test booking from LGA to New Orleans and was able to book an $106 flight and change for free onto a $426 flight.

NOTES:
  • Works with points or cash
  • Should work with companion passes as well but YMMV. CP addition seems to work on mobile app but desktop is glitchy.
  • You can do the changeover immediately after booking your reservation
  • Works for international destinations as well
  • Origin and destination needs to be the same. Exception is that if you have multiple home airports then you are able to take advantage of substituting a different home airport
  • Length of travel can be changed
  • 24 hrs free cancellation that can be refunded if you end up goofing this but some readers are posting that it might be hard to get a straight refund once the change is processed and the only option is credit back so YMMV on this depending on who you talk to
  • you can make unlimited changes in the above date range
  • Expiration unknown so book soon if you have any upcoming plan

Whats up with the NOTE here: "Origin and destination needs to be the same. Exception is that if you have multiple home airports then you are able to take advantage of substituting a different home airport" - wouldn't that defeat the purpose of this whole trick?

So the booking would have to be June 7 to X, but when I change it I could do May 21 to X (+- 14 days) ?

Also, it would seem like a waste of points to use them for this since you'd be saving more money than you would be saving points right? Maybe not, but it seems that way eh?

Sometimes it's cheaper to fly from one airport over another.

Not sure on this one.

The cost in points is usually made based on a multiplier times the dollar price. In many cases, you'd be saving the equivalent amount of points as your dollar price. This isn't always true as sometimes the points price may deviate from the dollar price.

Do you have to call in or the rebooking can be made within the app or on desktop?

You can book a flight for June 7th, and by able to change that flight to something as early as May 24th (which is 14 days before). One of my friends just did that so she could get a June 3rd flight.

This worked for me. Booked FLL to AUS for $89 and changed it for another day where it was $256.
whaaaa I have done that flight many times over the years. Maybe it's time again! AUS to FLL, out of the frying pan, into the wetter frying pan with east coast beaches.

Interesting. I have been wanting to book a flight to Vegas and the return flight just went UP today. So by using this trick, I can book my flight on a different day (within the 14 day window) then change the flight to this higher priced one with no charge?

EDIT: Totally worked for me. Booked the lowest fare to my destination not caring where the flight went. Paid for it. Immediately went back in and changed to the flights I actually wanted. It even tells you if you stay within certain dates, there's no charge. Awesome!

Does this apply to the "wanna get away" flights or only the "anytime" flights?

Does it work for multi city flights booked through advanced search? I am planning to visit two cities so I will be booking a multi city and a one-way back home. Has anyone tried that?
