Which do you think is more likely - Amazon sent a counterfeit product or that the reviewer purchased from a seller that's not Amazon?

A reviewer on Amazon makes solid points that these are counterfeit.

Edit: depending on which review you are referring to, I don't put much stock in that assessment. Changing the stitching on the waistband logo compared to a couple years ago is no surprise, and as far as the stitching on the outside vs. inside, this is pretty common on long underwear. I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it deliveratly as it actually is more comfortable and makes sense to have the soft smooth side against your skin and the threads / "rough" side on the outside where it won't rub against you. After all, this is still underwear so no one is going to see the seams.

These are not the best quality and you have to buy size larger because they fit snug. I was in retail business for years and we sold them in our store, so I am speaking from experience. Having said that, worth $3 each if sewn together properly.

Amazon is known for counterfeit sales but they also allow for easy returns so its a split for me
