I used to buy filter cartridge and replace every month but after switching to aquarium sponge [amazon.com] by cutting them to the same size as cartridge and rinse every 3 months using tank water, I never looked back.

Aren't these crappy filters basically the Marineland Penguin without the bio-wheel, which is easily the best part of them? For anyone considering them, Marineland has just come up with updated Penguin Pro and Emperor Pro models. As such, the older non-Pro models are running pretty cheap on Amazon. The 75, 100, 150 and 200 can all be had for under $15 these days, with some as low as $5 at some point in the past few months. The 350B went down to under $12 for a few days back in December.

These filters should fit one or two of the smaller Penguins too. (I'm guessing the 75 and 100, but double check before buying!)
You can also save a lot of money on cartridges and make these much more by making making some DIY modifications to the filter media in the big baskets. Google it or search on YouTube for lots of suggestions.

Otherwise, Also, there's plenty of room in some of these to add some Biomax (which has been dropping under $5 every few days lately and has been FP here several times recently) or other bio media (to house beneficial bacteria) to really make much these or the Marineland Penguins better.

Another great modification is to buy a prefilter sponge. Not only will it collect the larger debris, keeping it from clogging up the filter cartridges or whatever you use, but it will also house lots of beneficial bacteria too. You can find cheap prefilter sponges on Amazon or ebay. Just measure your intake tube to find a size that fits. If you have trouble getting one to fit (although they do stretch somewhat), you can also take the strainer off of the tube, since the the sponge will act as your strainer.

No.
Just cut carbon out of it and rinse the filter material in the dechlorinated water from the tank (not under the tap!). I haven't changed my filters in several years. The only thing I do in the largest tank is putting new Purigen media in Seachem Bag every other month.
