Thanks. I couldn't see any way to have them match the fare for travel that was already booked, so I just canceled and rebooked. Had to pay a $28 cancellation fee but still saved net $128.

Personal preference. I'd prefer to drive where I have control of my journey. I also dislike people so...
Good, so we're both glad you won't be on the train.

Probably not. I'm a very clean person and keep to myself. But I'm sure glad I won't be there

The amtrak website has got to be the biggest POS I have ever used to attempt to schedule any type of travel.

Fantastic deal! I've done this a lot between Tucson and LA and along the western coast. It's 10x less stressful than airports, and 3x more comfortable. Plus you get a wall outlet to charge things, and it's almost silent compared to jet engines. It's slower, but I find it therapeutic to slow down and enjoy the trip for its own sake.

Our experience 10 years ago taking a circular train trip from Minneapolis to California and back was mixed. We had a sleeper and it was tiny but expensive and included meals.

By the time we got off at the end the toilets were all full and overflowing and it was pretty smelly. They also had run out of most of the food items. One track section in the Washington area was closed so they put us on a bus to make a connection. I made my husband sleep on the upper part of the car which was really cramped. He would be too old to climb up there now.

Since I would not give up on the romantic notion of train travel, we recently tried it again just to go a short distance round trip to Atlanta. We had to get to the depot before 7 am for the arrival but it arrived late 50% of the time. On the return trip home the train leaving Atlanta was more than 12 hours delayed on both of the return trips so we finally gave up and asked the daughter we were visiting to give us a ride.

My advice is to just drive a car or rent one or have absolutely no schedule and expect the worse but hope for the best.

Is it really that bad? I've never taken a train in the States before but I've always wanted to.
Maybe certain areas are like that but I take Amtrak mostly to NYC and I've never encountered that. Sounds more like a description of the subway. Pick pockets, drunks, people banned from flying (whatever that's implying) don't typical take more expensive means of traveling. Even coming back from Knicks games / other MSG events I've never dealt with a rowdy drunk on Amtrak.

I also personally really enjoy the ride and the scenery. I've heard the Denver one is nice too. Only issue is that it's expensive. Otherwise I'd use it more. But ya typical passengers are business ppl, college kids coming home/ going to school and shoppers. Only people issues I've had is being gagged by perfume.
