Was all in to buy one, got all the way through checkout, was just about to click final button and noticed "Ships in more than 5 weeks", that's a hard pass for me, I can forget my own name in 5 weeks.

Yep - it was 3-5 days before it went on sale, then magically went to 5 weeks. Lenovo won't traditionally process a back order, however with COVID-19 lurking the local dog and cat markets, they need to lock in some future orders.

Could probably use VLC or MXPlayer as your media player. I typically don't have a problem with either one.
VLC for Android currently has a problem accessing files on protected network shares - does not cache permissions. Local files are fine.

This tablet would be a good deal at $80. As it is, meh!

LOL, I'm still using the 2nd gen Nexus 7 as well. It's not the fastest kid on the block anymore but gets the job done.

I'm writing this reply on a Nexus 7 deb running Android Q. This Lenovo most likely won't be updated past Android Pie. The Nexus only has 2 GB RAM though and tends to drag a bit in some apps or with multiple browser tabs open. It's also holding its resale price at around $150. The 3 gb Lenovo is probably more usable in the short term especially with a microSD slot and almost certainly has better battery life unless the Nexus 7 is sporting a recently replaced battery.

This, or Amazon Fire HD 8 with LineageOS? No gaming, just for browsing, youtube and reading pdfs.

I'd be interested in hearing opinions on this too.

I am shocked the Nexus 7 (2nd gen) is still working in 2020. It is 7 years old and probably scores less than 20k on antutu.... The Nexus 7 2nd gen sells for like $60 used on ebay. I am not sure where the other poster said it sells for $150 nowadays. I guess some ebayer always has to put out a joke "buy it now price" at $150. Someone must be on out of their mind to spend that much for such an old and weak device nowadays. If you want to upgrade and you are due, you should definitely consider this Lenovo.

There is no competion in 8 inch tablet in USA with ipad mini as the king.
Which is 3 times more expensive... very bad comparison IMHO.
