For those that have upgraded from 16gb, is it worth the upgrade for price/performance? Is it noticeable on Windows Laptops?

I have a similar question for us lay persons.

I have 8 gb 3000mhz ram, should I jump on this even though it's only 2400mhz? For a gaming PC (with a Nvidia 1060, and a Ryzen 5 3600)

This is a great price, not sure if medium gamers would recommend going to a lower frequency.

Advise is welcomed.

Thanks

Going to be highly dependent on what programs/games you're running. I'd say the quickest/easiest way to check for yourself is open up one or more demanding programs and use for 15 minutes or so, trying. Then pull up the task manager and check the performance summary to see how much of your system memory you're using. Like almost everything with computer hardware you really don't want to be using 100% of your capacity. If you're over 70% or so you'd probably notice a difference from having more RAM.

16gb of RAM is more than enough for gaming. Going to 32gb will get you zero benefits. Your performance will go down going to a lower speed of RAM though, especially if you're aiming for high framerates (72fps+)

Your best option, if you only have one stick of RAM, is to get a second with the same speed, same latency ratings, and same number of dram chips on it. You can open up the laptop to see if you have one stick or two, and if one, look up the specs of your current stick and get ideally an identical one, or else one as close as possible. If you currently have 2 sticks, get a 16gb kit at at least the same speed.

Also note that the faster versions of these ballistix kits need to have the XMP profiles activated to reach the higher speeds. For this 2400mhz kit that doesn't matter, but for higher speed kits check your BIOS to make sure it has XMP or RAM speed tuning options, as many laptops don't. If you don't, it might be better to look at an option like Kingston HyperX

You won't see much of a difference, and you will not see a positive difference in FPS by switching to this kit. W10 is very good at memory management, and the OS constantly adjust the memory use based on your usage and system capacity.

Thanks people for all the advice on RAM. Sounds like I'm better off just getting one stick matching what I currently have (1 stick, 1 open slot).

For gaming and general usage? No. For productivity such as coding, ML, CAD, virtual machines, etc? Yes
