How much has everyone else "lost" on paper? And yes, I realize you do not actually lose anything until you sell. How much are you accounts down?

Im currently down around $180,000...29% or so.

Well, I have a feeling its going to be difficult for most people to determine how much they're really down...considering very few keep track of these sorts of things.

I think most people didn't have enough to begin with to worry about how much they have lost. Many are wondering where their next meal is going to come from or if they are still going to have a job when this ends.

Thats a good point. I figured id throw the question out there to see if there were any other like minded SDers out there. The finance section here is pretty much a ghost town. With questions like this, a place like bogleheads or early-retirement.org is probably more appropriate.

Well it will vary but if you're "close to retirement" my guess is not all that much..... because you should be divesting from volatile assets the closer you get to retirement.

About 35%. I didn't look at what got hit worst, but I am guessing my intl and emerging markets are a little worse than my domestic.

Here's to hoping for a fast recovery Cheers

I lost around 10k (not because my account manager is smart and predicted the crisis, but because I started investing relatively recent when I moved to US). I was slightly upset with my paper loss but looking at how much you lost I am kind of glad that I learnt the lesson and will keep in mind to move assets to money market next time China generates another respiratory disease.

I don't really want to look as it's just depressing and there's nothing I can do at this point. I looked a couple weeks ago and it was 20%...just ride this puppy out. Maybe I'll check in a few months.

Well, lucky for me, im only 37...so ive continued buying the whole way down...which I also did during the 2008-09 crash. Even with this blip in the market, still waaay up overall...which is crazy to think of. Serious bull run.

For those closer to retirement, you definitely want to be more conservative.

At worst I was 36% off my high, now I'm back to 20%. However, if you compare where the indices are now to when we first reached them a couple years ago, I'm up about 40%. So that's the metric I'm using because ignorance is bliss.

I am down about 20% right now, was at 29% couple of days ago.

My recommendation, keep investing if you have the time on your hand!
