Good book overall. Gives the whole backstory of how the world started and goes through Sauron's rise to power. Fascinating read (albeit dense at times) but if you're a fan of the lotr it's a good bit of world backstory. If I had to guess the amazon show will be about a lot of what's in this book.

I have this on audio CD and listened to it on my hour commute for weeks. I tried to read the book and didn't make it half way, and I have read every Tolkien related book out there. It reads like a messy Bible. The audio CD version was great and it really helped visualize the story for me. Once Feanor enters the picture it picks up a lot of steam. Bottom line is the characters that come before the Hobbit / LOTR series are complete badasses on both the good and bad sides. Turin is my favorite and wrecks shop, and he's human. 10/10 if you are a Tolkien nerd.

$3 for popular ebook is always nice.

Separately, I tried to read this in high school and found it very dense, like the Bible. It's basically the Bible of Lord of The Rings universe, I did not find it similar to Fellowship of the Ring. Just a heads up.

This sums up exactly how I felt, I was also in high school at the time. I could not get into this book. For perspective I've read hobbit/LOTR several times over. Love those books.
I'm not sure if you knew this but J. R. R. Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic. He had a significant factor in C.S. Lewis' conversion from atheism into Christianity. The entire Lord of the Rings series parallels Christian theology and concepts. He was deeply religious. So it makes sense that the Silmarillion would read like the bible. That's not by coincidence.

It's a must read for Tolkien fans, kind of like the Bible is for Christians. Think Genesis but in middle Earth.

My favorite quote from the Silmarillion: Last of all Hurin stood alone. Then he cast aside his shield, and wielded an axe two-handed; and it is sung that the axe smoked in the black blood of the troll-guard of Gothmog until it withered, and each time that he slew Hurin cried: 'Aure entuluva! Day shall come again!' Seventy times he uttered that cry; but they took him at last alive...

I noticed the same. My guess is it was only on sale for Tolkien Day (3/25).

Except not even close to as interesting as the narrative of Genesis. More like the census found in the first chapter of Numbers but expanded for 300+ pages.
