For anyone interested. I have been researching this kayak at REI for almost 1 year and was shocked to find it at $1000 off reg. MSRP of $1999. I was able to place order, shipping was $58 and tax was $92 I am in California.

Do you know if the coupon code applies to any of Oru's other refurbished models?

I don't know. I was able to purchase the Haven obviously and then just for kicks I tried it on the refurbished Beach LT because that kayak is only $999 anyway (which would have made the kayak free) and of course it didn't work. I'm tempted to go back try them all, but I'm mostly just excited about getting my shipping confirmation for this boat.

I was definitely worried about this too! I ended up reaching out to REI support at they said that there was an issue with an early run of kayaks that would cause some of the straps to slip. They claim that current models should not be affected, but if you do have an issue the manufacturer will ship out replacement straps that fix it.

At this price, I'm going to take my chances, put it together and if I have any issues their return policy is 30 days. Wish me luck!

Interesting kayak. Am interested in the Bay ST or Coast XT model. Unfortunately tried the code on either of these refurbished models but it didn't work Frown

The haven is an interesting concept but with the wide open cockpit even though it can be converted into a single paddler format is just a bit too wide for my liking. Watched a review video and the reviewer had to fully extend his paddle to be even able to touch the water on both sides. OP if you haven't bought a paddle yet, remember to get longer ones!

Having paddled in rougher waters, I know this wide open area without a place to put on a sprayskirt is just asking for all those waves to come in and stay-in in my kayak. The haven looks great for calm lakes and extremely slow flowing rivers though.

Enjoy your new kayak OP!

That's the kind of waterways we have in the Chicago area.

However for those mild waters an intex inflatable works pretty good too; although the Haven probably does significantly better going against the current.

That said, there's a new folding kayak on kickstarter that looks interesting and is under $300. I don't have the link handy but it should be easy to find.

In order of purchase, we own the Oru Beach ST, an Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame inflatable, and the Oru Bay ST.

The Haven (which didn't exist at the time we purchased any of ours) appears to be a two-person version of the Beach.

For what it's worth, the Beach is far more comfortable than our AE, has more room for storage, and tracks better to boot. The AE is more stable than the Beach (but feels roughly tied with the Bay), but it's also obnoxiously wide, which can be a problem depending on your height and paddling style. I'm 5'10" and prefer a high-angle stroke. In the AE, I'm constantly rubbing my skin raw due to contact with the sides. And contorting in and out of the AE is a pain. There's also no footrest in the AE. If I could do it over, I would've skipped the AE and went straight to the Oru Bay instead. I bought my Bay lightly used with the Oru-branded carrying bag and paddle (both of which are trash, don't buy them) for a very reasonable-at-the-time $700 off of Craigslist. And I only did so because of how underwhelmed I was with the AE.

Setup is about a tie. I find the Orus easier to deal with, she thinks the AE is easier. Teardown is easier on the AE.

The sole advantage of the AE is that it's more portable and comfortable to carry. But that has been a dealbreaker for either Oru precisely zero times.

Just my two cents.

Life is too short. Just buy a used Hobie with Mirage drive. You can paddle or pedal. Lots of accessories too.

Thanks for the feedback from an actual owner. The Bay ST does look like a cool boat. Most of our trips will relax'd flat water paddles. What sold me was seeing several videos of 4 people inside one kayak (2 kids, 2 Adults) which seemed like a lot of fun and my sons love the water. If I remember I will try to update this thread when it arrives! Applause

Hmmm...still working for me. Keep in mind that you have to use the refurbished link in the description. Their site makes it a kind of hard to find the refurbished kayaks by default because they aren't in the navigation menu.

I received the code in an email promotion more than a year ago. The code was supposed to be for $250 Off on a completely different model. Not sure how long it will be active for, but it works now.

Yup, that's why she likes her Beach too, she can take two dogs, snacks, towels, and other belongings.

In my inflatable, I have just enough room for our small spaniel to perch on the bow, and the pump and some snacks stashed behind my seat.

At first glance, the Bay looks like storage wouldn't be any better than an inflatable, but it actually is quite roomy as well, given that all that interior space isn't taken up by sealed air chambers. I can shove all my belongings inside and have room to spare. No dogs though. The spaniel refuses to perch on the Bay, as it isn't as wide nor comfortable/grippy as the inflatable.

I think you'll be pretty happy with your Haven. Congrats on the purchase. Prepare to get a ton of questions and looks when you show up and launch from swimming beaches instead of boat ramps. Even the inspectors at entry-regulated recreation areas won't quite know what to do (I.e., does your folding kayak count as a watercraft? They usually seem to think no.)...

Exactly. I've actually considered storing a kayak in my garage by anchoring it to the rafters above our cars, but most of the solutions I found were too cumbersome. Beyond that, the bigger issue for me would be traveling with it. This kayak is 16ft long which is longer than my Subaru. The fact that its only 40 lbs and folds up means that I'll have a much easier time taking it to and from the water.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to it. I know all about getting weird looks and questions. The way I originally discovered Oru was when I saw one being unfolded at a dock near our home and I couldn't help but ask the guy with a ton of questions. I've had my eye on them ever since.
