I have the 18volt surge. It's pretty freaking awesome.

What's the point of surge? Sacrifice power for lower noise?

Ohio Power Tools has great, "local" store service with the convenience of knowledgeable humans on the internet.

When working in small confined spaces a impact could be deafening. I run into this more often then you could imagine. Also when you're working at a place of business or medical facility it makes a world of a difference in these circumstances.

I have both but finding myself using surge most of the time due to lower noise and considering it handles 95% of things I use impact for I'm not regretting buying it at all.

According to this review [protoolreviews.com], it has more torque than its M12 bretheren (and all the 12V competition).

According to reviews and videos, there's a pretty significant noise reduction and impacts are more gentle especially on projects that need a softer touch.

I have M18 version and it's loud enough to be heard but doesn't hurt ears as much as it's "big brother".
