I have the Ryzen 1700x right now and myu MB supports this, but for the money the 2700 is 170.00 and this is 270.00 at microcenter, for the speed bump which is better for the money?

I got this one mainly because it should be on par or better than the cpus in the upcoming game consoles and I wanted at least that out of my PC.

What are you using it for? If gaming what resolution do you use and whats your GPU?

Unless you're using all 8 cores, the 3600 at $160 (at microcenter) is a better upgrade for many due to the higher performance per core, especially for gaming.

Came here wondering this. I'm in the market and not sure how much CPU is enough. The games I play benefit more from higher clocks than more cores. I'm currently on an i5-4750, so anything is going to be an upgrade.

Most games max out at certain core clock as far as improvement goes. You could spend most of your money on an amazing video card and get far better results.

Most games don't use more than 8 cores, but it's nice to have more if you're streaming.

Imo depends on what motherboard you have now. If you have an old one Id leave it as is. Newer board I would upgrade to either one.
I got a huge performance increase with 2700x just swapping out my motherboard this week, granted the gigabyte aurus ultra gaming x470 was just a total pos but it seems the newer boards support faster memory speeds, ran this https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/26320169 and I have not even overclocked anything or tweeked it yet.

I would check your mobo and ram QVL. I recently swapped out a 2700x for a 3950x on a x470 mobo, and had compatibility issues with my ram sticks. So look out for that, especially if you have all four slot filled. I had to purchase new sticks.

By the way, this is indeed a sale, but its only marked down 3% = $10.Microcenter could be making some serious bank while everyone is stuck at home. I wish they would ship....

I'm fairly certain the consoles are using the mobile 4000 chips which while still more powerful than the 2700x aren't quite on par with the 3700x.

But still, for a chip that power efficient, it is insane to think how far AMD has come in the last 3 years. Kudos to them. It's great for us as consumers

Not to derail too much but I've been thinking about upgrading my aging FX-8350 8GB DDR3 build over the last few weeks and debating going to a Ryzen 5 3600 or a Ryzen 7 3700x. I know the 3600 is currently the better value today but I'm wondering if in the long term is the 3700x would be the better buy. Especially since when adding a better cooler to the 3600, the price delta falls to around $60-70.

I also won't be putting the extra money into a GFX card since I already have a GTX 1080.

I don't stream now, but I might if my machine was better, same for doing more video/audio production.

Thoughts?
