Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".

I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.

Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.

Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
  • Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
  • 2 months Premium service free
  • 6 months of Showtime free
  • 3 months of Starz free

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Good luck!

According to trehutch on 6/19/15, the new number to call is 1-855-407-3110 and the deal code is GREATDEAL1. Aside from the new number/deal code, my script below should still give you the best chance of getting the best deal. Keep in mind that other than a couple of posters, as of May 27th most people have not been able to get the $200 Visa Gift Card.
-4fit?

4/9/15 per 4fit?

-Call 1-800-531-5000
-Get to retentions department
-Confirm you are in retentions department
-Don't bother with their offers and simply request a cancellation 2 weeks out
-Confirm cancellation date
-Wait to receive "We won't you back", "Let us make it right", "blah blah" call or email with special 877-250-4624 number and NEWDEAL1 or NEWDEAL2 code
-If you receive that email, great. Go ahead and call in as soon as you receive it.
-If you DO NOT receive the email in a few days, call the 877-250-4624 number anyway and tell them you received the email
-You may get turned down for "not being in their system" yet
-If that is the case, ask if they can get you added to the system
-No matter what they say, call back in 48 hours or so and try again
-You may still have to haggle with them a bit to get everything listed in this thread ($200 GC, 12 month discounts on package, free 2015 Sunday Ticket Max, 3 months of premium movie channels, all requiring a 12 month commitment (24 months if you elect to receive new equipment)), but they also may just lay it all out there for you from the start
-If all else fails, you can always call the 1-800-531-5000 number back before the date you set and have the cancellation removed and try the whole process again later

well, I called the number in the OP (just the regular customer service number?) and said " cancel service" when prompted.

Got to talk to Ann (very friendly and helpful) and all I have to say is DirecTV just won major brownie points in my book. they are willing to offer a lot to keep you as customer.

My new deal:
- $10 HD access - FREE FOR 12 MONTHS
$65.99 Choice Extra Package - 230 channels (ncludes sports pack)
- $20 OFF for 12 months
- $5 OFF for 24 months
FREE STARZ, SHOWTIME FOR 6 MONTHS (do not have to call to cancel. they will roll off)
FREE HBO 3 MONTHS (call after 3 months to cancel)

EQUIPMENT OFFERS:
FREE 2nd HD DVR RECEIVER (waived the technician charge) - requires you sign a new 2 year contract

$47.99 + $6/month (2nd DVR) = $53.99/month
+
$250 ONE TIME CREDIT

needless to say, I'm staying! thanks OP and DirecTV

Customer of 11 years and never late on my bill. My discounts were ending so I called in to see if I can get my discounts renewed since I truly can not afford the regular price and need a discount to stay with them or else I would need to cancel. They said there are no discounts available at this time. I guess I would need to look to the cable company to get a cheaper basic service.

I would not sign up or change a directv package right now. This week they are supposedly coming out with a 5 tuner DVR and I would hate to be stuck with the old tech by signing up or committing to now. HMC has been out since 2011. Post is pointless.

09/25/2012
Customer for 1 year, no late payments. Gave me 1 free HD DVR and 1 HD receiver for $49. Waived the HD service fee for 12 months and gave me $10 off my bill for 12 months.
Made me extend my contract.

10/02/2012directv customer for last 9 years, current bill of approx. $100 per month, do not watch much hbo, etc, or sports. Directv refused to upgrade boxes even though they were broken, without renewal of contract. Got Century link flyer in mail, signed up for 10mbps internet and same number of channels as directv for $96, 1 year contract, getting a $250 amex cad free and a samsung galaxy tablet for free.

10/04/2012DirecTv customer for 14 months (this time, first subscribed about one year after the company started) Called last weekend and I was offered $10 off for (I think) 12 months, 4 months of Showtime and the Red Zone Channel. I was told this was the only offers available at the time. I declined them.

This morning I e-mailed via their website and stated that I'd received a letter from Dish Network (true) and when comparing packages their top tier packages, without premium channels (America's Top 250) found that that package would be $36 less than what I'm paying for the Xtra package from DirecTv. I was sent an e-mail back giving me a phone number and PIN code to call in with.

I just spoke with the rep and she took $15 off for 15 months, $20 off for 12 months and $5 off for 24 months with a one time credit of $25. A total savings (over time) of $610.

She said DirecTv is always willing to work with their customers.

I cancelled my Dtv today after a year of bad service, billing errors and flat out lies from the rep that signed me up. Its as if nobody at Dtv actually listens to what the customer (myself) was saying until it all came to a head. In the end all they would offer is the lowest package they have which still doesnt compare with what I can get with cable. Should add I dont watch or care for anything sports related.

Ill never go back, just not worth it. The phone reps I spoke to were more like used car sales people with one even pulling the "there is nobody but me to talk to" spill. Thats when I canceled with her supervisor.

Sorry for your bad experience...Try applying the golden rule when dealing with your cable company, and maybe you will be happier with them...Be thankful you have a choice...

Yes. Generally it does require a new contract but you also do get certain promotions too.

Thats something I could never get a strait answer about as when I first signed up a year ago I was about two months from a move. The rep that signed me up said the move wouldnt cost anything, but after the installer handed me the remote he said it would cost a couple hundred dollars to have the service moved. Not even the supervisor I spoke with yesterday had an answer about contract renewal per move. Its another one of Dtv's bait and switch tactics that ends up the customers fault due to Dtv reps incorrect info. Get it in writing, whatever they tell you. And then get that notarized. And then mail it to yourself. And do all this while recording both audio and video. Holding a newspaper...

I'm a bit confused. Some people seem to be saying that once they schedule a disconnect date, one should call in before the actual disconnect happens to get the best deals.

But others seem to wait until the disconnect actually happens on said date before calling in for the best deals (especially if they receive an email/call for a welcome back deal after the disconnect goes through).

So which strategy yeilds the best offers?
  1. Scheduling a disconnect date for ~2 weeks out and calling a few days before the date to see what they offer.
  2. Scheduling a disconnect date for ~2 weeks out, waiting for that date to pass and be disconnected, then calling to see what they offer.

well we tried option 1 and the offers to stay sucked so we disconnected and had cable installed kept getting calls from directv along with an email saying they wanted us back called and after a few DAYS of trying to get what was offered to us applied to the account we went back

one of the reasons we we offered a fair deal was we still had the directv boxes if we would have sent them back (watiing for return box took weeks) we wouldnt have had the same deal offered
good luck

ps imho the costco.com 300 dollar costco card is a great deal heck cancel after a year and you are still ahead of the game find somebody else's name to sign up for direct and do it again

Poor experience so far. Called in 3 weeks ago to schedule my disconnect for today 7/20. They turned me off at midnight on the day I called in. So I call back, they get me turned back on, but then I get an email saying I was now locked in to a 12 month agreement. Finally get that taken care off and I'm back to being scheduled to disconnect on 7/20. I call in yesterday to the 855-407-3110 number and the win back team member says they can't do anything yet because I am not disconnected yet. They tell me to call back tomorrow after I am disconnected. So I call back this afternoon, and now they are telling me that I have not been disconnected long enough for any offers to show in their system. Again they say call back tomorrow. We'll see what happens then.

This scenario happened to me last year with a few unauthorized reconnects on their part as well, causing me to have to reschedule the disconnect. After a week without service, I was finally promised what I thought was fair from a sales rep only to find out after I reconnected and signed a 1-year contract that I was legitmately lied to about several bonus deals, including the free ST. I couldn't get anywhere with supervisors and eventually ended up writing a hand written letter to the DirecTV HQ where I was finally compensated what was promised on the "unrecorded" phone call.

Moral of the story is that obviously every agent and customer service center is different but I get the feeling after reading all of these horror stories on here that these slip-ups, unauthorized reconnects, and empty promises are not so accidental.

I'm out of my 2-year contract with a 4 week old baby at home, trying to cut costs...

I just want free sunday ticket, but not sure I can deal with the disconnect/nodisconnect shenanigans... There's gotta be an easier way, if all I'm looking for is ST?

My experience:

Called to cancel, only offer 15 bucks off a month, so set a cancellation date 2 weeks out. Called the Winback team day before the cancellation date, didn't receive any additional offers and was told to call back after I was disconnected. Day of disconnect (went into effect at midnight that day), called and was given:

45 bucks off of Choice for a year
Free Sunday Ticket Max
200 gift card

I was happy with how it worked out, but being disconnected even for just about 12 hours ended up screwing me a little. I was subscribed to MLB Extra Innings and had paid 4 out of the 6 months payments. When I reconnected, my only option was to pay the half season price over 4 months. So I'm paying for an extra 2 months to keep the MLB Extra Innings service. I also lost out on one month of refer-a-friend 10 bucks off. Tried for an hour to get those reinstated, to no avail.

But overall, the 200 gift card will more than cover the downsides of disconnecting so I'm still happy. I just wish that it wasn't this much of a pain in order to get a reasonably priced TV bill.
