Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".

I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.

Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.

Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
  • Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
  • 2 months Premium service free
  • 6 months of Showtime free
  • 3 months of Starz free

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Good luck!

Just a side note, but you can just subscrib to one premium channel, and if you see something you want to watch on another channel, just switch your service on the directv website. You can only do this once every 24 hours or something I think, but I've been doing it for about a year and havent had any extra charges. $12 for all the premium channels look around
haha nice play...rep for slick

Unfortunately that doesn't work anymore. It has been a few years since that worked. They now will charge $10 if you do not keep the premium for 30 days.

what extra channels are going to be available?
From what I have read we can probably expect the following:

Balancing of HD between D10 and D11
Move the 9 legacy MPEG2 HD to MPEG4
74 - Universal HD
78 - HDNet Movies
79 - HDNet
206/73 - ESPN HD
209/72 - ESPN2 HD
245/75 - TNT HD
281/76 - HD Theater (was Discovery HD Theater)
501/70/509 - HBO East HD
537/71/543 - Showtime East HD
Add additional HBO HD channels (per the previous HBO announcement)
All of the new premium sports packages will be MPEG4 (ex: Sunday Ticket, ...)
East and West DNS all to MPEG4 (West already announced)
99 - PPV HD (MPEG2) eventually shut down
A few may need to wait for D11 (or may be added to D10 when D11 is safely in orbit)
290 - Disney Channel HD
292 - Toon Disney HD
297 - Boomerang HD
307 - ESPNEWS HD
311 - ABC Family
Others that may be available (Travel Channel HD, more movie HD premiums, ...)
Lots more HD LIL (at least 100 HD LIL by year-end 2008 - 84% of U.S.)

I've noticed that SpikeTV has had "HD" in their logo as of late, maybe they are coming too?

Existing customer here, with 4 months left on the contract. Looking to upgrade from SD to HD. After 5 calls, this is the best they'd do --

HD DVR $99 + $19 shipping
$10 credit per month for 12 months (the guy couldn't get this to go through so ended up doing an upfront credit of $120 to the account)

Not great, but what can you do? After 5 calls, I just wanted to get it overwith.

You are incorrect. After the website changed now you just have to hit cancel on the premium you have. Then it will show the option of exchanging with any of the others, and the side it explains that you can't CANCEL for 30 days, but you can exchange between them at any time since you are already paying for one. I just switched from hbo to showtime for this weekend since it was a free preview on hbo and had no problems with the "exhange" button but it took a while to take effect for some reason even though it emailed me right away saying it was changed (never took but a few seconds before).

You are probably right. But, like myself, most people that used to do this did not subscribe to any premium and used that method. Unfortunately that does not work for folks that don't subscribe to a premium. Thanks for the clarification.

Oh, I did not know you meant that, but if you subscribe you one you are able to exchange it for any of the others while only paying for one of them. Only problem with this for me is if 2 good fights come on hbo and showtime at the same time otherwise with shows and what not they repeat all through the week so I can watch something on hbo on sunday, and switch to showtime and watch whatever then. Did not have to worry about this until a couple weeks ago when my 6months free showtime ran out

No, it will only work if you subscribe to one of them. If you pay for one you can change to any of the others, but only like once a day. As far as boxing, just check hbo/showtime saturday nights in the guide to see if any fights are coming on, or check the boxing schedule on their websites. I can't wait for the calzaghe/hopkins fight next month. There have been some excellent fights in the last month, esp. vazquez/marquez, and that was a non ppv showtime fight.

I tried today again and I got this same deal as you described above. Just got tired of messing with it and they gave it to me essentially close to free after I get the credit for a year. Just have to front the money. Overall I am satisfied.
