Unable to reset my password

1 May 7, 2020 at 05:48 PM
I created a new account and every time I login, it just sends me an email that has a link and only through that link am able to. I am not able to set any password to my account. When I reset my password, there is an email with the link that takes me to create a new password page, but whatever password is set, I get the message - "Invalid password format". I am sure it is atleast 8 character in length.

My profile username: slickstove819.

I have the same question. Its so stupid to not publish the password requirements on the password change page and showing an error that invalid format. Why do we need to send email to someone to change password? What the hell are the requirements for new password?

How to Reset Your Password
I forgot my password. What can I do?

If you forget your password, you can click on the 'Forgotten Your Password' link. This will appear on any page that requires you to fill in your password.

This link brings up a page where you should enter your registered email address. An email will be sent to that address shortly, with instructions for resetting your password.

Since passwords are encrypted, there is no way to resend your original password. This option provides you with the ability to reset your password.

You must be able to receive emails to your registered email address for this to work. You may need to check your spam filters and folder if you do not see this email in a few minutes.

Paging finzz2dlft,
I reason this isn't some simple error between the user and the keyboard. Here's the broken flow from my use-case:

* I've just signed up for an account, and I was never prompted at any point to set a password. (This is a problem by itself.)
* I confirmed my email, and successfully logged into slickdeals with the email confirmation link.
* I went into my profile to reset my password, since there was never a "set password" prompt in the sign-up or confirmation flow.
* I successfully followed the password-reset URL from my email back to slickdeals.
* I tried resetting a password, with every blessed combination of requirements I know of. (Over 8 characters, mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, adding in a number, adding in basic punctuation, etc.)
* I gave up and searched Google and landed on this message thread, which is from within the past 2 weeks. I think something may be broken on your end.

FWIW, I'm using Firefox, and I noticed the uBlock Origin extension tripped up the "continue" button on username confirmation, but I disabled the extension and got through. That didn't also work for password resets.

My "appeal to authority" as to why you should consider what I'm writing:
I write software professionally (recent job titles are "Senior Software Engineer") and I have totally designed and implemented the user-signup, user-authentication, and password-reset flows for both the server-side (as in wrote the code for) and mobile-apps (also wrote the code for) of a Pretty Big Company. I suspect something is broken on the slickdeals side of things.

I realize you all might be relying on OAuth2 flows via Google, Facebook, etc. but the basic email / password flow may have fallen to the wayside and is probably worth double checking. It shouldn't take much effort to sign-up with email and set an initial password, or reset the password.

Also, I have no idea how I'll be able to log into this account again later. I'm "logged in" from clicking the initial "email confirmation" URL, but also run the extension "Cookie Auto Delete" that clears cookies when I close tabs. So, if my cookies get deleted, how will I be ever able to log in again since I've never been able to set a password? I possibly won't be able to reply to any of this once I close this browser tab!

Dang, that was a fast reply, you're on top of stuff! Thanks!! I hope its just something simple that gets sorted out (or is just something we can tweak on the user-side with the browser, if the browser is the problem.)

I'm also not able to set a password. I've all password combinations with a password generator. Tried on Chromium and Firefox. Need to rely on activation code that is sent to my email every time I want to login, which is quite inconvenient.
