I wanted another Play:5 to create a stereo pair and after realizing the new FIVE is not capable of pairing with a gen2 Play:5 I decided to buy a gen2 before they disappeared. No tax for me NY and shipping was $15.

Alternatively PC Richardson still has stock as well for $399

Is there a reason not use sonos one sl? I read on sonos forum. You won't notice the difference between one, play 3 and play 5 when they are in surround mode. Any sonos experts out there with similar experience?

I want to replace a pair of my play 3 for one sl, but not sure. TIA.

I wouldn't. A single One SL won't sound as immersive as your pair of Play 3s. I think there'll be a noticeable difference in sound. I personally don't think the One SL is worth upgrading to from the old Play devices unless you're after airplay 2.

I meant in surround mode. I don't use one sl as a single speaker. I'm contemplating replacing a pair of play 3 for a pair of one sl to be used in surround mode. But not sure whether it is worth or not.

For surround, you won't notice anything. Remember surrounds doesn't mean stereo. To be clear, you are hookng this up to your playbar and these are the surrounds, right?

Surround yes but OP said stereo. two Play 5s or two sonos one Sls will be significantly different for Stereo

If you are using your 3s as surround yes replace them with one sls and put your 3s in another room as a stereo pair (or two separate rooms). You will get the best use of your money that way.

That's because they recently released the Five. Only real difference between the Play 5 and Five is increased memory and processing power and a new wireless radio, And Play 5 will work with their S2 Platform. If it were me I would get the Play 5 at a discount.
