I didn't realize there was a direct flight. Charlotte is a nice "quiet" airport meaning IMHO it isn't as crazy as the bigger hubs but apparently does have some long hauls.

I think the concept of "safety" involves multiple factors:

1. Is the destination (outside the airport) safe? That's about the community.
2. Is the destination airport safe? That's about the security, airport personnel, facilities.
3. Is the flight safe? That's about passenger density, wearing mask, etc.
4. Is the origin airport safe? That's about the security, airport personnel, facilities.

Well, what did I miss?

Safety depends on what you perceive to be safer. Many travel companies are doing temperature checks. In actuality, temperature checks fail to identify asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus. So temperature checks are just Security theater - theatre in that they're doing them for show, for display - to make you perceive that you're safer (but you're not).

With any form of travel, please keep up social distancing, wearing a mask, and hand washing.

IMHO different forms of Travel might be safer than others.

Consider the mode:
1. Personal automobile.
2. Train.
3. Cruise ship.
4. Bus
5. Airplane.

Some modes of transportation are much safer. While some stick you in a metal tube/box with 30 - 300 fellow travelers, all crammed into narrow seats like sardines in a can - all breathing, and rebreathing, the same air - and if one, just one, passenger is infected, they're going to spew thousands upon thousands of virus particles with every breath - and you're going to breath in those infected respiratory droplets with every breath you take. How many virus particles you inhale depends on your PPE. How many virus particles does it require to be infected? Depends on your immune system.

IMHO, as a disabled senior with underlying conditions, travel for me depends of what I perceive to be safer; that's driving my car. It's the safest mode for me. Potential contagions would be when you refuel, when you visit a rest stop, when you eat, when you use the bathroom.

Next are trains, Most intercity trains have relatively comfortable, and spaced out seats. You can practice social distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing easily aboard.

Cruise ships are safe - the industry has had years of practicing safer travel because of norovirus outbreaks aboard. You can actively practice safety protocols while on your cruise, The cruise lines will have to modify many of their existing protocols. All to spread out passengers in every venue or facility - restaurants, theater, casino, bars and other venues - anywhere people congregate. The buffets will no longer be self serve, instead crew members will be doling out your choices. Casinos will be modified for social distancing. Passengers need to respect each other by wearing masks and PPE. If there's a socially irresponsible passenger on board they can create their very own super-spreader event. However, I'd recommend staying in a cabin with a balcony instead of booking an interior or ocean view cabin.

Buses and airplanes are the chanciest modes of transportation. In both modes you're crammed in with many people, breathing shared air, for hours and hours. IMHO, I wouldn't travel by air for some time; it's just not safe enough for me.
