Why do these things say

"The SB6190 is best for cable internet speed plans up to 400 Mbps"

And in an image it says if you have Comcast it would be 400mbps or lower.

When they can download 1GB+? or in this case 600mbps

I think for gigabit they require you to rent the modem, at least they used to.

I'm currently using a combo Netgear router/modem. Would this be a better choice paired with a decent router?

I assume you commented because you aren't happy with the performance? ThisAn actual non-bugged modem along with a good dedicated router has the capability to really increase coverage (and speeds) in your home.

Edit: I mistook this model for a different one (don't read and post when drunk folks), DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL. Others below have outlined why so I won't here.

Nice to see a post like this where modems with defective chips are sold. Very nice. Nice post. But what do I know...took me 10 seconds to google this. Perhaps the post header should say SB6190 refurbished modem with puma defective chip. Yes, that is a better title.

A review off Amazon but I research it and it is true across a ton of forums. Dont buy modem with Puma chipset.

Intel's Puma 6 chipset included in several cable modems is defective as it allows high spikes in network latency quite often (slow web page loading, for example). These severe network latency spikes interfere with online gaming, streaming video, or simply surfing the web.

New Investigation into Cable Modem Chipset Defect
Certain Cable Modems, Including Arris SB6190, May Be Plagued by Latency Issues
Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe is investigating whether cable modems containing Intel's Puma 6 chipset, including the Arris SB6190, contain a serious defect that prevents them from operating properly. Reports on multiple websites and forums indicate that these cable modems suffer from "latency jitter so bad it ruins online gaming and other real-time connections."

Intel has confirmed the defect, stating that the company is "aware of an issue with the Puma 6 system-on-chip software that impacts latency," but after numerous months, has failed to release any update that fixes the issue. Cable modems containing Intel's Puma 6 chipset that may be affected include:

Arris SB6190
Arris TG1672G
Arris TM1602
Super Hub 3 (Arris TG2492LG) (commonly, Virgin Media)
Hitron CGN3 / CDA / CGNV series modems:
Hitron CDA-32372
Hitron CDE-32372
Hitron CDA3-35
Hitron CGNV4
Hitron CGNM-3552 (commonly, Rogers)
Hitron CGN3 (eg CGN3-ACSMR)
Hitron CGNM-2250 (commonly, Shaw)
Linksys CM3024
Linksys CM3016
TP-Link CR7000
Netgear AC1750 C6300 AC1900
Netgear CM700
Telstra Gateway Max (Netgear AC1900 / C6300) (Australia)
Cisco DPC3848V
Cisco DPC3941B / DPC3941T (commonly, Comcast Xfinity XB3)
Cisco DPC3939
Compal CH7465-LG / Arris TG2492LG (commonly, Virgin Media Hub 3)
Samsung Home Media Server

Do not buy the SB6190--Intel and Arris have acknowledged a latency flaw with the Intel Puma 6 chipset used by this modem (as well as others). Let me start by saying that I purchased another Arris modem (SB8200) to replace this flawed modem, so I have no animosity against Arris...they produce fantastic products...although their handling of this latency issue has been much less than stellar (and is the source of a Class Action Lawsuit).

The backstory: I purchased the SB6190 in 2016 as it was the top rated DOCSIS 3.0 modem at the time. After some time, we started noticing network dropouts and unexplained latency. My kids internet gaming suffered as did our video streaming service (i.e. Netflix, etc.). My troubleshooting took me down the path of new cables and other "fixes" with no perceived change. Then I ran across the Class Action Lawsuit against Arris for hiding the fact that the Intel Puma 6 chipset used in the SB6190 had known latency flaws. ALL SB6190 units are impacted by this latency flaw and neither Intel nor Arris has successfully fixed this issue...yet they continue selling it without mentioning this flaw (which is the rationale behind the lawsuit). The DSL report can be found by Googling "The-Arris-SB6190-Modem-Puma-6-Chipset-Have-Some-Major-Issues".

The worst part, Arris will not refund your money or acknowledge the issue if you call/complain...your only course of action is to join the Class Action Lawsuit.

Bottom Line: Avoid the trouble, and go with another brand or upgrade to DOCSIS 3.1 with the Arris SB8200 that uses a verified and proven Broadcom BCM3390 chipset (check with your ISP first to ensure they support this new technology).

I have this modem with 600mb down, and consistently yet much higher. Never had any dropouts that weren't caused by the ISP. Happy with my purchase with this a couple of years ago
